We will likely be in Santo Domingo on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, which is the election day in the US. Is there a place around Zona Colonial where people gather to celebrate and/or drown sorrows, as they watch the election results? Either ex-pat or Dominican?

You will be able to find it somewhere, however the main thing on T.V will be the winter baseball league.

No place in Santo Domingo will say open long enough on Tuesday to show the returns. The Western districts won't even start reporting until Midnight and joints will be closing down. The better bet is to find a good coffe shop with cable/ dish in the morning and be there when they open. This one won't be over until the absentee votes are counted.

I find it really strange that just 7 States will decide the Presidency. The other 43 States and the District of Colombia are a lock.

A good reason why the electoral college system should be abolished so elections can be won by popular vote.

I disagree. If that is the case, then why bother to campaign in states with small populations and then by extension they would end up at the bottom of the list for federal aid. A Presidential candidate could spend all his resources in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania and never set foot in any other state.

It's too bad the lamestream media is too afraid to do real reporting on election night. CNN, Faux News, and the big three are wusses.

Gracias al unicornio invisible y color de rosa, there's Comedy Central for some real, up-to-the-minute journalistic reporting.

Will it be GOBAMA! or Rmoney (Oops! I meant Romney)?

Either way, Wall Street wins:

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Unless the polls are too close to call in FL and OH(quite possible), there should be a clear winner by 9PM EST. Daylight Savings ends in the US on Sunday. If by some chance, Obama is the clear winner in FL, he will have enough electoral votes to put him over the top.

270 needed to win

Safe/strong leaning votes for Obama: 243 ~27 to win
Safe/strong leaning votes for Romney: 210 ~60 to win

Poll closing times(EST) and electoral votes in toss-up states:

FL 7:00 ~ 29
VA 7:00 ~ 13

OH 7:30 ~ 18

NH 8:00 ~ 4

CO 9:00 ~ 9
WI 9:00 ~ 10

IA 10:00 ~ 6

Vote reporting is not instantaneous. By Midnight less than 70% of the Eastern Time Zone votes will be posted and oddly enough, the prognosticators will be declaring victory at 1% tally. I wouldn't trust any info until Nov 7th.

I forgot to include California in that list.

Not this early. But not too far off. I don't think anyone expected such an electoral landslide.

Sorry, I did not find any place that was tuned into the results. In the end we found out about the returns from newspapers on Wednesday morning while strolling El Conde.
