The starting bid price at the auction will probably be more than if purchased new.

Curious to hear updates on what happens here

Now you got me thinking of another movie: Saving Ryan's Privates.

I can see how the association arises. Danilo does look a bit like a failed 1970s porn actor - it must be the 'tache.

Anyway the vehicle story was reported in yesterday's DR1 news, a summary of the LD article. They are thinking about it.

Possible auction of government vehicles
Treasury Minister Simon Lizardo says that as part of the government's cost reduction plan, it is considering the idea of auctioning around 1,000 vehicles, mainly luxury ones, which they have on their inventory.
He said that some used to be assigned to several government officials and others are now in the possession of the National Assets Department (Bienes Nacionales) as they have passed their depreciation period, and that they could be auctioned off next month.
He went on to say that said it was normal to change vehicles once they had reached the end of their depreciation period but that it still had not been decided whether the government would be buying more vehicles that consume less gas, in replacement of high-consumption vehicles, saying that this would be a decision for the Presidency Administrative Minister, Jose Ramon Peralta.
He made the comments while talking to journalists, following a meeting with Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas and the Director General of the Budget, Luis Reyes Santos.
Finally he mentioned that in cases where some former government employees, especially Deputy Ministers who had left their posts, had not handed back their vehicles, the Bienes Nacionales Control Department was responsible for recovering them. He said, however, that he had no further details on this situation.

Man, you remember the name of porn movies?? Damn...

On topic, I read somewhere that some of those vehicles are already past the operating range. Either too old or damaged. If so, this would be the usual auction, only with more publicity this time. I still hope that is not the truth, and most vehicles are in good shape and operating conditions. Anyone know how to participate in this auction? you never know what you can find...

Santiago DR
At the end, the finance minister states that auctioning off these gas guzzlers will improve the environment............
I don't understand how auctioning off these vehicles will better the environment.............
What are the odds of these vehicles being sold and taken off the island............
Did I read this properly.........

I guess it looks WAAAAAY better this way than saying "It's no longer DR government killing the earth with these gas guzzlers, we have sold our recently purchased luxurious jeepeta to wife, brothers, cousins and distant relatives and those 15 years old crapbox to our people."

Which begs the question: How long will some DR1 members' honeymoon with Danilo last?

C'mon B, you are ruining the deception. Of course the operating or repairable vehicles will be sold and then be returned in the private sector.....but then what will the goverment have to do?.........replace those vehicles with new vehicles for those same government officials......gotta love it....all in the name of the environment....excellent ploy....the problem is the cost of new vehicles at a time when the budget has been busted since March, 2012.....guess that means the tax increases and the IMF money will be here shortly....cha ching.

Now you may think that a cynical position.....and you would be somewhat correct. But the real cynicism may come when you see who bids, who buys, and how much they really pay.....and, if they really do "pay." Afterall, the DR is dead last of 144 countries in "Favoritism in decisions of government officials" and "wastefullness oif government spending."

It is clear that to some negativity is the order of the day, and pessimism the first order of business. For my part, and i presume many other Dominican citizens, its encouraging to see a Gov't taking firm measures to curb wasteful spending.

I'm not going to approximate gasoline usage of these yipetones, but i'm willing to bet that the reduction in fuel consumption will have a positive impact on the budget. And that is good thing.
