?Unite for the benefit of your people,? Bob Marley implored in ?Afrika Unite.?

News reports on Monday revealed that Haiti became a member of the African Union, which previously only consisted of the Motherland?s 54 continental countries.

<!-- There are no ads assigned to position -->?It?s more than symbolic, because now there is a link between Africa and the Western Hemisphere,? said Dr. Leonard Jeffries, leader of the World African Diaspora Union.

Throughout five centuries of divisive tactics by European colonizers, Africans in the Americas have consistently been attempting to undo what the travesties of the trans-Atlantic slave trade embedded in their psyches.

?Any African nation in the Caribbean, Central or South America becoming part of the African Union is a good thing,? contends professor James Small, WADU executive director.

Over 200 years ago, Haiti became the first Black nation in the West to liberate itself from its European oppressors, and the Haitians established themselves as a self-determining people. Now the small peninsula nation is again making unprecedented history. With Jamaica and Trinidad rumored to soon follow, supporters are optimistic that this act will become contagious.

?Haiti is the prototype. Out of the Haitian Revolution came this concept of building an independent, free African nation,? Jeffries surmises. ?This means other nations in the Western Hemisphere will follow.?
After the devastating January 2010 earthquake crippled Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo contributed $2.5 million toward relief aid. Other African nations also assisted with similar humanitarian efforts.
In January of 2011, during an international conference in Tripoli pertaining to the African Diaspora, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi asked delegates, ?Why shouldn?t people of Black descent living outside the African mother continent be allowed to have a referendum to decide if they want to be part of Africa or not??
Patrick Delices, professor of Africana studies at Hunter College, states, ?This is a monumental step towards a global and unified African system, in terms of developing power as it pertains to economics, politics and culture; and it?s our first step towards sovereignty.?

This past February, at a conference in Ethiopia, the African Union granted Haiti ?member observer? status, a designation that which will remain valid until January 2013, when Haiti will upgrade to ?associate member.? Prior to Haiti applying, no other country outside of Africa had ever made such a request.
?It?s important historically because Haiti is part of this enormous history of struggle and fight for nation-building,? Jeffries determined. ?We call this great period the African Renaissance, the rebirth of the global African family.?

Africa and Haiti have a unique shared history. As one of the few Black members of the United Nations during the 1940s, Haiti pushed for the decolonization of Africa from imperialistic rule and protested against the invasion of Ethiopia by Italy.

Delices says the admission of Haiti to the African Union is a significant milestone that hopefully will ?help with the Haitian-African trade and could help eradicate poverty, boosting the economy.?
Jeffries concludes, ?This is a linkage that we need to have, and it will be meaningful for the future in linking up the different parts of the African world. It will put the reparations issue fair and square before the world.?
These and other issues will be discussed at the State of the Race Conference at Howard University from Nov. 14 to 18. For more information, visit ibw21.org.

Great move! Like the jews; the blacks should have stayed united and most issues we're facing today would be long gone.

It's about time. The lasting solution to poverty can only come from the poor. Right now all the problems of Sub Saharan Africa, disease, illiteracy, homelessness, joblessness, crime and tribal war are all just symptoms of one root problem=poverty. Poverty in lands rich with mineral wealth and arable land. A solution is at hand but the people cannot be led to it, they have to put their heads together and work it out.

The same problems associated with poverty in that region also aflict Haiti. These people will need to cast off despair and grab the reigns of their future. The aid truck is only a bandaid. This patient requires a major operation and healing can only come from within.

Grey - you make good points but POVERTY is not the real problem. Look at the majority of black communities worldwide from Australia thru Africa, Asia, Europe and Americas they still live in ghettos and record the highest deaths. The main problem is the HATE and jealousy from within.

Hate is a symptom of lack of education opportunity and hope. Haiti is getting a chance here with all of the aid and rebuilding. I hope they get a somewhat effective administration to lead them up. No more Papa Doc despots or bullshtter expats like Wyclef

Not sure how I feel about it...

I think yes they share a lot of things in common, but Haiti is not an African nation either.

Plus, African Union can barely solve their own problems, let alone a country 5000 miles away.

Symbolically, it is nice though.

Ancestors from West Africa

Why would they? They are not an African nation ...

Well, how much of an African nation is Haiti then?
I guess the DR could join them out of solidarity with common ancestors...
Just saying.

I thought the AU has been very instrumental in orchestrating peace in North Mali. Also, the AU (Amison) troops help drive out the Al Shabab off Mogadishu, Kismayu and their other major strongholds.

Go back and re-read the article, Gaddafi had great plans and he was well respected by most AU states - but then, he had to be put away with!

As long as Haiti keeps its Americas and Caribbean ties; it has everything to gain

Instrumental how ? Mali is still under siege by Islamists who wants to Sharia in Mali and then West Africa. People are being mutilated, women raped, population are fleeing the area to go south or refugees camp. It's a disaster !

To me, Gaddafi didn't give a flying f*ck about Subsaharan Africa, just a power trip, don't fool yourself. In fact, he armed the Tuareg rebellion in North Mali. Many of the weapons now found in Mali came from Libya.

As long as Haiti keeps its Americas and Caribbean ties; it has everything to gain

We agree.

Gaddafi wanted africa to be self-governed - he pushed for the United States of Africa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia concept which would have made Africa to have the largest total territory. He was on the front-line when it came to relief efforts in the impoverished sub-saharan states.

And Yes, he did arm tribes and he ruled Libya w/ an iron fist.

The West African Nations and AU are working hand-in-hand to restore order in Mali - not so long ago, Nigeria rolled in troops to Mali to help pacify the region.

Consider this True size of Africa

"Gaddafi had also indicated that the proposed federation may extend as far west as the Caribbean: Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and other islands featuring a large African diaspora, may be invited to join.". In joining the AU, haiti has PARTLY fulfilled Gaddafi's prophecy. Now lets wait on the DR :)

As they say here the DR would join the AU when Colon lowers his finger - which is never. Apart from Dominicans jealously clinging to their Spanish heritage and notwithstanding Haiti's belligerent past the DR would rather be part of associations that represent growth, stability and future. Speaking of that, there seem to be very few left to choose from anymore.

Correction: Nigeria agreed to send troops in North Mali. The troops are not on the ground yet.

Yes indeed, West African nations are working hand-in-hand, because the islamists threat in north Mali is a threat for West Africa in its entirety. Their ultimate goal is to bring Sharia to West Africa. May God protect us :paranoid:

It's hard to tell what lies ahead given the direction the politicians are driving the dr
