Hello -

I am looking to book a guys trip to the DR this upcoming July.

Will likely be 15 guys in total. All late-20's, from NYC. Want to enjoy the beaches, nightlife, casinos, and activities...and looking to meet other tourists and enjoy some local nightlife as well.

Which area best suits the above - Puerto Plata, Sosua, and Cabarete? Also, are there any great all-inclusives, or should we seek renting a house?

Any recommendations/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Joe

Derfish has been there and done that. All three are close by drive time wise. Cabarete has excellent surfing at Encuentro and a good beach that along with the prevailing winds make it a world class kite surf spot. For night life I prefer Sosua for its short strip of bars, and music-dance bars. If the surf is high the beach in Sosua is a protected bay and is safer for swimming. Also Sosua beach has lots of trees so you are not left baking in the sun all day. I have never found much in Puerto Plato but maybe that is just me. Others like it. As far as hotels and A1s just find the best price. The A1s will try and keep you on site. Do not pay any attention to warnings of the dangers of going out. The north coast is a very safe area unless you behave in a very stupid fashion which is true of anywhere in the world. You will have a vacation that you will remember the rest of your life. Wish I was down there and my wife would let me show you around but neither are even a remote possibility. There is only one road so you cannot get lost. Be very careful driving at night between towns. There are cars with no lights, motorcycles with no lights, maybe cows, horses in the road and its dark. Plus on the weekends everyone driving past 11 pm is drunk.

I advise against driving after dark, PERIOD. Pay a driver with his own vehicle, simple. For $5-$10 a man, they don't have to worry about killing a moto with no lights at 3AM on highway one or a cow.

Hi, why not both travel in the day to PP and at night Sousa. I am also from NYC and did the same thing with co-workers in December but our group was 8 guys if I can offer more insight send me at Email:statef2@aol.com

I think the biggest "drunk driver" threat is around 7-8pm when the amateurs are headed home after stopping for few after work...

Thank you all for the input. Seems one definitely has to be careful driving around.

Can anyone recommend fun all-inclusives or hotels in these areas? I'm reading mixed reviews of the Playa Dorada complex, and can't seem to find any strong recommendations for fun AIs (with nightlife/clubs within or nearby the resort) within Sosua or Cabarete.

Would appreciate any advice!

Thank you,
Joe

Welcome to DR1. If you want North Coast then try Cabarete. If you want Punta Cana then look at the Hard Rock Resort.

If its a "guys' trip," I would look into getting a few villas, which may prove cheaper than hotels. Check with residencial hispaniola and residencial casa linda, in addition to VRBO.

Zoom is correct, you should really view POP, Sosua and Cabarete as a single destination, stretched out over 40 or so miles. Puerto Plata has the most infrastructure, Sosua has the best "girlie bars," and Cabarete and Sosua both have great daytime activities available at the beaches. I'd say Cabarete has more restaurants, but each town has no shortage of decent spots.

My advice is to NOT try to be a tour guide for 15 guys. It's far worse than herding ornery cats. Make sure there's a car for every 3-4 guys if you do villas, or stay in a Sosua hotel so you won't need transportation, and just let everyone do their own thing.

In a group that big, you'll have at least one person who:

Will attract drama no matter what;
Will drag around making whoever is with him late;
Will skimp on the tab;
Will be super particular when ordering anything;
Will ask you to translate (because he didn't bother picking up "Spanish for Dummies" when it could have been helpful);
Will have problems with his accommodations;
Will think that by saying something LOUDER and s-l-o-w-e-r that a person who doesn't understand English will somehow suddenly "get it;"
Will think they can shortchange a chica, and be surprised when their iPod goes missing;
Will go on lecturing Dominicans (in English) about the "right" way to do something;
Will think it's funny trying to "make it rain" in the club;
Will NOT think it's funny that they didn't bring any clothes for rainy weather;
Will wonder why they budgeted $150 in "fun" money, and are broke by the second day;
Will think their stomach is somehow immune to the bad tap water;
Will enjoy haggling with a farmer who wants to sell a whole melon for a dollar, but that's somehow not cheap enough; and
Will knock on your door at 4 a.m. because their chica "suddenly" wants to go home, and somehow that's your problem.

I know, your instinct is to think, "naw, my boys are cool," but you've probably never traveled with all of them at one time to a place like this. Just remember, while you're a cool guy and a friend to them, you're not a chaperone. This is your vacation, too.

Don't forget the guy who says on the plane on the way there.....

"I ain't payn for P-SSY, never have, never will"

By day three, he's setting records for bringing back Chicas to his room, tapped out his meager savings account,

Borrowing money from his boys.......

And sayn "Payn ain't so bad"

They will get tossed out of Hispaniola with a puta parade, the builder and their atty live there and are OK with "Low Key Mongering" not a Thrilla in da Villa.

Same thing for Casa Linda.

MUCH more tolerant @ CL, they will not think twice about tossing you out of Hispaniola with NO refund.
The OP should just rent a bunch of hotel rooms in NG or Casa Hyena.

Thank you all for advice...this is very helpful.

I'm definitely trying to avoid being held responsible for each individuals enjoyment, which is why I am so focused on picking the right place to stay...

I have found a few villas which are "decent," but nothing that will comfortably fit a group of 15. Are there any hotels (or all-inclusives) that will have other tourists, decent pool / beach scene, and also within close proximity to restaurants/nightclubs/casinos??

Cheers,
Joe

Wyndham Tangerine in Cabarete is and AI and Iberostar in Puerto Plata. I have stayed at the Iberostar before moving down here and its a decent resort but if I was coming back down again I would do somewhere by Cabarete/Sosua. Puerto Plata doesn't really offer any nightlife. I don't chase the "girls" so I can't comment on how the action/rates are. I do see some very nice non-hired types of women though down on the beach in Cabarete at night in front of the Lazy Dog/Ohno's/Jose O'Shays/Kahunas. The Wyndham is a short walk to downtown Cabarete and if you feel adventurous grab a motoconcho for 50 pesos so you don't have to walk.

Villa is definitely cheaper but it will be hard to find a villa that is willing to rent to that large a number for a puta parade. They have had bad experiences in the past. Stuff like the girls get a key and make a copy and when the party is over and all of you have left they go back with some buds and rob the place of all the furniture and whatever is not bolted down. Plus a hotel will offer you a bit of privacy and the guys will only get robbed one at a time and it will be easier to figure out which girl is the thief.
"Where on earth is my cell phone?". "anyone seen my new Nikes?".

The OP never said they were going to "partake" in the local fruits!

Thank you brlatm.

I'm hearing similar views that PP doesn't have much to offer...

How was the crowd at the Wyndham Tangerine? Want to ensure it isn't mostly families or honeymoon types...and there will be other tourists like us.

Please let me know if there are any restaurants, clubs, or casinos that you would best recommend to try.

Really appreciate the help (I'm reading such varied reviews)!

Best,
Joe

C'mon, Tambo. 20 dudes, heading to the North Coast? C'mon. If they're not competing in the World Kitesurfing Championships (or gay), they're chasing chicas.

I mean, c'mon now. :bunny:
