A friend of mine asked me to bring an unlocked blackberry as his phone is cracked. Can someone tell me a) network is a) GSM and b) can I buy any blackberry in the US as long as its unlocked? He says its cheaper to buy here than there. I leave in 2 days so rush responses are greatly appreciated.

Unlocked QUAD Band GSM.

CLARO Frequency: GSM 850/1900

Orange Frequency: GSM 900/1800/1900

Yes. GSM is the choice of 3 out of 4 mobile companies in DR. As long as it is unlocked it will work and get at least 2G data service. For 3G you need to check the band frequency if the device is not quad band.

Yes, GSM, If your friend is coming to the southeast im selling a blackberry 9790 for 5,000.00 Dominican pesos or 125.00 Dollars, very good conditions, send me a pvt message i can send you pictures. I get a new 9900 so I dont need the 9790.

3G service for Orange is in 900 band.
3G service for Claro is in 850 Band.

If your friend will use only whatsapp will survive with VIVA 2G 1900 Band.

Luperon makes a good point.

What is your expectation with regard to being paid back? Assuming this friend is not someone you plan to give a phone to, has repayment been mentioned?

Haven't heard from Riva, but I need someone to explain the difference between a jailbroken phone or legitimately unlocked phone. I got a jailbroken iPhone 3gs for someone, set everything up with no problem and it works without a problem.
