I wasn't sure where to put this, but I thought it would be of general historical interest rather than specifically Santo Domingo.

I found this when going through some of my late fathers' belongings. It is a postcard sent to him by his USA math teacher from Cuidad Trujillo in 1938. I don't know why he kept it for 75 years, but I'm glad he did. It is in mint condition and a nice look at history. I like the cool "dos centavos" stamp and the fact that there was a pretty good postal system back then under the dictator.

You should ask a mod to merge this thread with the "Old Dominican Republic" one on the DR Photo Walks part.

OMG yes. I'm afraid to say for fear of being accused of toting Depends. OK, , , , , Mrs. Crabtree, the teacher in Our Gang, right???. Now that should give the card some added value. You think????????

It shows how far we have fallen as a country that such a simple thing like having a decent postal service needs the continued existence of a dictatorship in order for it to be maintained. Instead of democracia, this current order of things should be called "mierdacracia". No joda nadie, co?azo.

how do you get to that conclusion from one 1938 postcard?
sending a postcard from the DR either before or after Trujillo's era would probably end with the same result, i.e. arrival at destination.

......anyway,we are practically living under a dictatorship right now, and I don't see any change, better or worse, in the postal service.

When was it removed ?

Remember Jackie Cooper's crush on Mrs. Crabtree.

Where was the city gate located? The card suggests it was located at 27 de Febrero. Was it removed to make way for the bridge ?

PJT
