Are there any bars that are open in the early afternoon in Santo Domingo?

Preferably places that don't sell food so a chica can't run up the bill. I'm thinking one of the malls would have one in its food court but I don't know for sure.

Thanks

El Conde, the cafe outside the conde de penalbe, I believe opens fairly early, this cafe is not super expensive.

Agora Malla has a a tapas place, open in the afternoon, that has indoor and outdoor seating. Pizzarelli I believe also at that foodcourt. Pizza is not overly expensive and it is filling. Order a medium for two people, if an amiga gets hungry and then have drinks at the tapas place (if at agora).

Pizzarelli also on El Conde, with indoor and outdoor seating. Various places with 2 x 1 happy hour specials. I like the mojitos at Plaza Espana, zona colonial.

If you want a list of happy hours, click "Happy Hours" and the date and this site will show a list of places with happy hour specials: Que Hacer Hoy | Tu gu?a de actividades en Rep?blica Dominicana

The cafe at the Conde de Penalbe Hotel, El Conde, Zona Colonial, at 11AM on a Monday. Pizzarelli is a two minute walk from there. I don't think the prices at the cafe at the conde de penalbe hotel are overly expensive.

Great place to have a drink and people watch. The other side of the plaza is the oldest church in the new world. You are shaded while sipping on a cold one by tree which is over 100 years old. Great atmosphere. Very good service and reasonale prices.

It's the best people watching place, but I think it's expensive, especially since they started adding the obligatory service charge. I used to like to leave the old fellas a tip, but find that now not so much as it just passes my acceptable price limit. Well, considering the years I have sat there there week in week out drinking beer from a not so overly cold fridge (the beer is served at a perfect drinking temperature, and so if you have not finished your bottle within 5 minutes is has lost it and not so enjoyable). Anyway, point of this was to mention the road works right outside, are they finished? I expect so as they were still at it 4 weeks ago, but didn't seem to be doing much so you never know. Foodwise, it is terrible and not so cheap either.

My favourite watching place recently has been the German Erdinger biergarten down on the Malecon beside the Plaza Baron, you won't get much to eat in there before 5 or 6pm, and by then the bars in the Plaza Baron are open and so it's much more relaxed over there and even better people watching (but watch out for the children in cars, it can get pretty carzy).

But it is difficult to find a place that will not be selling food at all. Snack like places are going to be Hooters, and TGI's in Acropolis, or there is the bar on the entrance that doesn't do food, but I don't recall the name, I don't like loud music and so never stop off there. I prefer to freeze my a$$ off while drinking in TGI's, eating wings and watching 5 different sports events at the same time.

Other than that, you can go to one of the off licenses on Gomez and just sit on the car and drink like the 'happening crowd' of Santo Domingo seem to enjoy doing so much.

Hotel Bars open in the afternoon. Smaller Hotels oftentimes have a patio or rooftop terrace, with a colmado (small grocery store) nearby, that can deliver cold beer.

Sheraton has a recently remodeled lobby bar. Hotel Billini in zona colonial has a roof top pool bar that is open some days in the early evening.

Lulu is very nice in Zona Colonial, opens in the afternoon, outdoor seating in the courtyard or indoor seating.

Mentioning hotel Bars.............................. Yes, you just reminded me about hotel BQ, it has a great little offroad bar which swifts into an adjoining restaurant in the evening. More importantly up on the roof there is a very swanky pool bar and is a perfect setting to take a Dominican (or shallow) women to impress (really is nice and playboy like), if she thinks she is materialistic (I know that sounds weird, 'thinks', but most Dominican women like the idea and thought of materialistic as they see it as a sign of wealth, rather than actually truly be materialistic which usually involved quality, which in turn involves money. Give a Dominicana $300 for a necklace, and she'll buy a plastic one for RD300 and pocket the change, there are few average Dominicanas who are truly materialistic) and impressed by all the BS your average man finds OTT then yeh, take her there!
When I was there I wasn't sure what was going on as I've never seen grown men with so little body hair, I felt almost paedophilic amongst adults.

On Gomez and what? Do you know the name of any of the nice ones? Something like that is what I'm looking for.

Can Dominicans lot 'live' anything. Playing live bongos to a track that has bongos on it does not count, does it?? Lip Sync, Bongo Sync, good job some of these people can dance a little otherwise they are utterly redundant as a nation of any form of entertainment.

Saying that, the waterpark dolfin thing, dancers on the Northcoast used to be very good, and feathery. Dunno if they still do that stuff, was a while back, but great little show.

What time you likely to be going down there? If you are driving then go to Venezuela (not far in the car), you'll have a much better time. It's only RD200-225 in a cab from Gomez even if not driving.
If you are going to go to Gomez then stay down the bottom end, beside the big liquor joints. But you need a car or you'll just look like street drunks!

Finally, go to Hernandez on Lincoln, just oposite the school up from the Casino Hispanola. There is a very good friend of mine and the boys in there the best. He doesn't do any food other than sandwiches and it is a big place, big TV, but loud music. Plenty of students and working class people passing. Used to be my local, lived across the road for 3 years.

I like Omega, seems maybe Pitbull might have gotten some of his riffs from Omega.

Juan Luis Guerra, very talented.

Others I enjoy, Aguakate (herculito), plomo song, Mozart la Parra:
