At once time, and perhaps to this Dominicans had a thing about naming Crist?bal Col?n by name. It was okay to refer to him as "El Almirante", but the name was sort of taboo.

Of course, his real name was Cristofero Colombo, being as he was Geneovese. His usual signature was in a sort of Latin +ferens, with a cross instead of the +. That means Christ bearer, sicne he wanted to make it clear that all the Indios could be saved by Jesus since he had discovered them.
