A couple of years ago Danilo Medina made a surprise visit to this hospital and this was his reaction after seeing the appaling conditions of the medical center.

His most resounding quote:

"One thing that worries me is that in Dominican Republic the hospitals with the most upgrades reject the poor. Accept anyone that has insurance and are able to pay the co-pay. But for those that don't have that, that can't afford the co-pay, those that have nothing this is their hospital. I will hold you (mentions name of the administrator of the hospital) accountable to make this happen (IOW, to not reject the poor.)"

Apparently a new system of modern public hospitals is under development.

See, all those taxes you pays doesn't goes just for new jeepetas. This hospital is visible from the Las Americas highway on the right before the tunnel (on the left after the tunnel when going east bound.)

The problem with the DR has not been the lack of construction by the goverment, the opposite is truth, it has been rather the norm through different DR presidents. Balaguer instituted this more that any other, the real issue was/is and hopefully woun't be, maintaining the same infrastructures and keeping the ladrones away from the people's goods.

This by no means is a dard thrown, I certainly hope this as many other constructions are well kept for the good of the poor populace.

DR has a 70 BILLION US dollar budget deficit this year!!!!!
Best way to get lots of new "Yepettas" is the "Kick Backs" from big construction projects, and expensive equipment.

new schools built! granted, they have no equipment, some fall apart with first rain and the teachers are dumb as rocks but nonetheless.
hospitals renovated! granted, with only one bathroom but hey, just hold it till you get home, my momma told me.

Lipstick on a pig...

I have a very good friend that is a well known surgeon in Santo Domingo.
He owns and runs 4 clinics and also performs kidney transplants in the public system.

To hear him speak about what is "actually" going on is a little disheartening to say the least.
Especially when it comes to hospital directors, fraud, incompetent staff etc.
