Couple of months ago, I had posted that my family and I decided to move to DR from Haiti. Right after that post, we started to hear that Dominicans hanging Haitians in DR. It was later confirmed on news. I quickly changed my mind. However, my husband still wants to move to DR. I want to know from you guys view if it's okay for two beautiful open-minded Haitians continue on with our plans. We both understand that all of our documents must be onpoint. We got that! Our life is more of a concern while in the DR. I refuse to go down due to racism. :classic:

Nope! I am not a racist person to open up a forum for racist comment. I am a godly person. I just want to know if it's safe to visit DR.

Is it safe? Sure, if you come in legally.

The real question is why? It's unlikely you could find a decent living in the country (most Dominicans struggle with that, frankly). Could you find a way in to the US, or another country with a stronger economy (and thus more opportunity) for your family?

You seem to speak (or at least write) English quite well, so I assume you are educated middle class Haitian. Maybe if you make some inquiries you could even find employment before your arrival. I have seen Haitians working in middle management positions in various Punta Cana resorts. Knowledge of English and French are positive considerations, and if you speak Spanish, you could try to establish yourself in the resort industry.

Rubio pretty much nailed it. If you don't have the skill set to get a decent job you will not like it here. Most haitians that I know work in quite low end jobs and work very hard for very little.

Most, but the anesthesiologist here in Jarabacoa is Haitian, so I assume he is not the only Haitian professional working here.

Why knowingly move to a country where your culture is looked down upon? Making a political statement or simply naive? The world is full of places where you would be welcome with open arms...... Sadly, the DR is not at the top of that list.
I asked my Dominican ex-girlfriend did she like the building where she lives.....Her reply was there was too many Haitians.....

It's teh innerwebs so you can pretend to be whoever you'd like.

For example, I was thinking of moving to Haiti with my girlfriend, Kate Upton, but then I saw Haitians burning Dominican flags and now we don't think it's safe there. The news reports confirmed it. Plus, she works as a massage therapist and we're worried about too much racism for her to make a living.

You got bigger worries if your girlfriend is a massage therapist.

Assuming from your English you and your girlfriend are US educated and grew up with American food and fashion sense then I would think you will be fine as you would tend to look North American(read: larger), and less Haitian(read: scrawny with a big head). So people will pretty much assume you are a Black guy from New York.
Other than that....who knows?

to the OP: right now there's lots of tension between Haiti and the DR. I am quite sure you
and your husband have read about the incidents. All I can say is judge for yourselves.

Do you think it's safe for Dominicans to be living in Haiti at the moment?

Ya know...

If I was thinking about moving a mile down the street I'd go by there every day for a month at all times of day and night to check the flow of auto and pedestrian traffic, kids, dog walkers, garbage pickup, proximity of services, neighborhood demographics and a whole lot more. I'd approach the neighborhood from different entry points by auto, public transportation, bike and on foot just so I'd be 100% sure of what I was about to get into.

Anyone thinking of moving to a whole different country should probably take similar precautions, regardless of who they are or where they're from.
