To the east too on the other side of the Ozama on Av Espana is quite lively too with a few decent bars.

At the western end by where Luperon joins you have the cabanas too........

Probably just an incredible coincidence. A really, really big coincidence.

Just like Vienna Caribe is always full of businessmen and their secretaries.

But one cabana on the west end of the Malecon is called 'La Uni'.........and Universidad del Caribe and even Universidad O & M are close.

I was on the Malecon last night and we had a good time for cheap. Went to La Ceniza. Some dudes singing to BG tracks but all the music being played was classic merengue and bachata.
The wives were not drinking, so it cost about 1,000 pesos for an enjoyable night for 4 people.

A few weeks ago I had a revelation. Remember that "whacky" idea years back for the artificial island off the Malecon? At the time I thought it was probably crazy. Now I think it may have been genius.
The Malecon does have big potential, the problem is trying to improve it all when it is a bunch of private businesses and properties is tough without a major plan and funds.

If they built that Island and combined with project in San Souci created a nice environment near the sea that tourists and dominicans can enjoy, I think little by little private businesses would want to be near the entrance or near the attractions.
I could see development spread outward from these two places, if done right of course.

The malecon should be a great place to take a walk at night. Stop in at a bar, restaurant or cafe, buy ice cream from a kiosk, hear live music on weekends etc.

The place where female students can get a 'beca' arrainged with the faculty head or where female students can get better grades by 'discussing' their exams with the professors?

More for when the estudiante is in the cabana with her amante, patron or novio and mom calls she can say "estoy en la uni". Just as empresarios can say "estoy en la oficina" while in the cabana with the same name.

I recall visiting and walking the Malecon in SD about 7 years ago, it had rained hard about an hour earlier all over SD but now the sun was out the Malecon was attractive EXCEPT for the one meter high fountain of sewage two feet in diameter that was shooting into the air from a sewage main fouling the air and the sidewalk and then running into the ocean right below the Malecon near the casino. It was a bit of a shocking reminder that raw sewage is dumped right into the ocean there at the Malecon...do some think it's a good idea to build a man-made beach or island for Dominicanos & tourists?

For instance, many years ago a friend and I visited Acapulco and went on a local short scuba dive righ off a local beach. My friend ended up almost losing his life 8 days later after returning to the USA due to a parasite that entered his brain via his eardrum. That parasite was from the raw sewage dumped in the bay at Acapulco the doctor explained.

I give poorer countries a lot of respect and I don't expect nor want them to be like the USA for example but unprocessed sewage is bad for everyone and sewage processing is NOT expensive infrastructure in a country that has very cheap manual labor. So in short I'm not going to give the DR a free pass on this issue, it's just not acceptable and bad for public health as well as the ocean and food chain.

I remember the Malecon back about 23-25 years ago... There was a lot going on especially on the weekends. A lot has changed over the years. East on the Malecon there are still a lot of activities. Not so familiar with West of the Malecon. But back in the day it was the place to be.

Anyone know anything about this ?? or has an opinion ?

Maybe because it is filthy looking, a horror to walk and last but certainly not least full of garbage. Just saying. It needs much
care, much cleaning and consideration from those bloated politicians to Fix it up. But just to say it is consistent with the rest of the very ugly capital. Santo Domingo appears like the ugliest capital in the Caribbean. It is a pathetic hodgepodge of
horrendous (no) planning. The Malecon? Wish it was as beautiful as it could probably be!

I suppose Ideally, the malec?n in SD could be like the one in La Habana.
Barahona has a nice malec?n, and they fixed it up about three years ago, but they need to do more about maintenance.
The main entertainment is sort of like watching NASCAR, except it is free. The beer is cheap, the food is generally rather mediocre, except for the rustic fish place.
Lots of locals on their motos, including at least a couple or three that do wheelies with two people aboard. It is like NASCAR in that you watch for some sort of accident.
