Now that all of the North American cable programming is an hour later here in the DR due to the time zone change earlier this month, I would like to begin watching a local TV newscast in Spanish. I have Delancer cable so I have lots of channels to choose from, I just have no experience watching any of them, do not know where they are broadcasting from or any ability to judge the quality of the information they are passing on.

I live on the North Coast and would prefer a channel that at least considers this region in their news stories. A channel with English subtitles available (yeah right, not a chance) would be helpful. Quality local and national news stories. Not a lot of opinionated commentary (at least for now). A news cast that begins at 6 pm local time would be ideal.

I'm working on my Spanish and more exposure will be helpful. I may as well learn something while I do that. Any recommendations?

on CDN 37 there is a daily show by jos? guti?rrez, monday to friday, starts at 1 pm.
http://www.cdn.com.do/programas/jose-guiterrez/
he is a bit slimy and i always get distracted by his cow licked hairstyle but he speaks very clearly presenting latest news. beware that his show may contain footage of dead people.

la zeta, the most famous radio station in DR has two great shows. in the morning they have el gobierno de la ma?ana from 5 am to 11 am and then el gobierno de la tarde from 3 pm to 7 pm. both are super good and very informative. it's a bit of a challenge to understand some of the conversations, partially due to the fact that some presenters talk over one another, shout and use dominicanisms and partially due to the fact that they refer to dominican history, politics and latest news stories.
you can listen to la zeta online: http://www.z101digital.com/app/pod_cast_on.aspx

la zeta also has news reports and various other shows during the day where they may talk about medical issues, politics, social problems and more.

also, i really suggest local newspapers. not only to build up the vocabulary but mostly to know the details of the event so that when you hear about it on the radio/tv it is easier to understand the words once you know the story.

I'll second CDN37 - we watch it all the time, and most of the time I understand everything they're reporting.

I read 2 or 3 online Dominican papers daily and try to read in Spanish and get the gist. If something is of particular interest I translate with Bing which provides comic relief from the gory or criminal stories do to the poor translation or syntax errors. Fights translated to tiffs is particularly amusing to my demented sense of humor. Of course the summary news on DR1 on my pick list too !

Is newspaper delivery an option here, or do I have to go pick one up everyday? :)

read them online:

http://www.elcaribe.com.do/
fairly simple language, they focus most on crime, violence and related news (having thus become my number one newspaper). kinda tabloidish, if i may say.

http://www.diariolibre.com/
one of the most popular newspapers in DR (if not the most). paper version is free and one can arrange daily delivery to businesses but probably not in every town. again, fairly easy, decent style. wide range of subjects.

http://hoy.com.do/
a bit more about politics. fairly easy reading as well.

http://www.listindiario.com/
a bit more high brow, i guess. less likely to use dominicanisms. controlled by the government, as i hear. has quite a lot of general info on medicine, mental health, diets and so on.

important note: read only news. do not attempt opinions section. i have always had a suspicion that those articles are written by pompous narcissists with a twisted sense of self worth. the opinions are wordy, overflowing with obscure details and references, pseudo novel like, tiring, disastrous, monstrous, unbearably pretentious and totally exhaustive literary flops.

I do read the DR1 news but I am specifically looking to improve my Spanish so figure while waiting for the English news to start I can catch a DR channel and see what's going on around here. At least that's the idea anyways.
