he might have been a visitor since the article stated he was a hotel guest.

Hate to say it but Jarabacoa has lots of drugs and thieves but rarely is there murder. There is one Barrio, Barrio Blanco that is considered a dangerous place, at least at night. The barrio near my house, Barrio Don Bosco used to have that reputation but has become safer but there is still a problem with thieves.

not a good couple of months for gringo, lately.

It is not just gringos.

Since the beginning of December the number of homicides throughout DR has spiraled out of control. Several reported everyday in the press all over the country.

As mentioned in a post yesterday gringos in Santo Domingo and the East Coast have avoided being added to the 'gringo' recent tally....so far.

I know death and murder are very touchy subjects for the mods... when it comes to gringos.
How many gringos have been murdered since the 1st of the year?

Not to make light of anyone's death, but if you are counting among 'gringos' all foreigners, and you take into account that in addition to permanent expats, over FIVE MILLION tourists come into the country in a given year (over 400,000 per month on average) a handful of murders over a couple of moths -- as regrettable as each is -- seems like a minuscule number. Of course, zero is much better.

And at least a few of these involve people who may have been engaged into personal or business activities that are riskier than normal (alleged illegal drug deals, and perhaps selling the same share of a business to multiple separate buyers come to mind). Still it would be great if the murder rate for ALL is reduced to zero.

As most (any?) expats do not live in protected and secured AI's, your FIVE MILLION number is not relevant IMHO....

Five is nothing unless one of them is you. We kill more than that in one afternoon in Houston.

i know you are really touchy about such commentary, but a foreigner killed every four days in a small caribbean tourist destination is kinda high.

your mileage may vary.

You can't use the total number of foreigners to this country when most are tourists and many of those arrive at an airport, especially Punta Cana, are transported to their resort and many never leave their resort (with the possible exception of an organized event from the hotel). The resorts tell the guests not to venture out because it is dangerous.

How do you get 1 foreigner every fourth day? we were talking about 5 over a couple of MONTHS.

Anyhow, it depends on the total number of foreigners, obviously.
