MITUR announces 97,000 hotel rooms for 2018
There will be 97,000 hotel rooms in the Dominican Republic by 2018, says the Ministry of Tourism. The Ministry says the fast pace of hotel room construction places the Dominican Republic as the leader in growth in accommodations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Dominican Republic is the leading hotel destination in the Caribbean region. The Ministry says at present there are 82,502 rooms in operation, and another 15,000 under construction.

Most of the hotel construction is taking place in the Punta Cana area, where new roads have offer easy connections to beaches all along an almost 100 km beach coastline. The Punta Cana International Airport is offers more direct flights from more destinations than any other airport in the Caribbean and Central American region.

Jamaica could piggyback on Mexico, Cuba and DR successes
If you can’t beat them join them, seems to be the new strategy to stimulate an increase in Jamaican tourist arrivals in coming years. Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, or the Spanish Caribbean, have been showing growth numbers in tourism in the Caribbean. Now, English-speaking Jamaica wants to convince people to go on multi-destination vacations, Europe-style, to experience the rich cultural diversity of the region.

Jamaica is signing agreements to boost marketing activity and encourage airlines to offer multi-stop routes within the region, says Jamaica Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett. He says this is particularly appealing to tourists that have three or four weeks of vacation time.

Along these lines, recently Air China expressed interest in flying to the Dominican Republic bringing Chinese tourists. Air China already has direct flights from Havana to Beijing. Jamaica has been receiving Chinese investment for infrastructure and could participate in multi-destination deal with this Asian airline.

The Dominican Republic is the regional leader in air-arrivals to a single country in the Caribbean.

Punta Cana gets direct flight from Ecuador
The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) approved direct roundtrip flights from Quito in Ecuador to Punta Cana. The flights will be operated by Aerolíneas Galápagos (Aerogal). The airline, also known as Avianca Ecuador, primarily flies to the United States and Colombia from the Galapagos Islands.

JAC also recently approved direct flights on Tam Linhas Aéreas on the route Brasilia-Punta Cana-Brasilia starting 18 January 2018. This connects the beach resort area with the capital of Brazil.

Bolivia air connection
The president of the Civil Aviation Board Luis Ernesto Camilo announced that Boliviana de Aviación is interested in starting flights to the Casa de Campo / La Romana International Airport (LRM) in November 2017. The airline is owned by the government of Bolivia and operates flights to cities in Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Peru, and the United States.

The airline would be taking advantage of the open skies policy of the Dominican Republic. Airline executives say Boliviana is interested in operating one or two flights a week, with the option of expanding the frequencies depending on the demand. The airline would offer connections for travelers from Buenos Aires in Argentina and Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Boliviana de Aviación officers Hugo Estrada, chief of planning and marketing, Andres Rodríguez, chief of strategic planning and Julio Andrade, chief of the legal department visited the CAB accompanied by Milciades Castillo, in charge of operations and logistics at the La Romana International Airport.
