CASH OR TRAVELER'S CHECKS

Please provide me with your opinions: Are travelers checks the best way to deal with money in the DR? We will be touring the DR for 3 weeks. Considering the fact that using credit cards at 3-5% and not always accepted, I am considering travelers checks. Are ATM's readily available for additional cash and what are the costs? How have you managed geting cash on long trips?

US Dollars are always welcome in the DR no matter where you are. I recomend doing 1/2 travelers checks (never had a problem with American Express) However you will have to cash them in a major city or resort area. The problem in the DR with ATM is they often do not work and depending on who the service company is the card will not be accepted. This being said I have found that in Santo Domingo or the Resort towns I can usually find one that works if I need to, but I have learned never to count on this.
