Hi all! Having been to Rep. Dom many times but never in October, can anyone tell me what to expect in terms of weather in say, the second and third week of October? A friend is thinking of going then as long as the hurricane season is pretty much over.
Thanks very much!

We generally have our first snows about then

They don't last long but it can get down to freezing. Especially when the wind blows from the north...

Of course we have had hurricanes until November but they don't bother us much since igloos are well protected from the elements...

Be sure to bring lots of woolens and lots of sun block, since the sun reflects off the snow a lot..

Mt. Duarte

The skiing season is just beginning at that time on Mt. Duarte. Unfortunately, with all the blackouts and brownouts the skilift may not be operating full time as I have heard the backup generator donated by Smith-Enron in response to some favorable government deals is waiting for some parts from Siberia. They say the parts are on some ship carrying nuclear material traveling from Japan to the U.K. and that El Presidente is sending some of his warships to provide an escort when it enters Domincan waters. How's that for importance!!! Why? The Dominican Olympic Ski Team practices at Mt Duarte, that's why. The teams says it is a blast to ski during the hurricane season. They have to wait for years but when a hurricane does pass it deposits so much snow it is measured in meters and the team loves to go out on the slopes to catch the winds just before the end of the storm passes. They have downhill races to see who can be first to cut in line at the skilift. There is so much sun. Oh! I mean fun, especially at the beaches. Regards, PJT

I'll try to give you a serious answer.

Weather in the Dominican Republic, to visitors and first year residents, seems pretty much the same year around. A little cooler during winter months than in the summer. Hurricanes can be churning through the Caribbean even in November, which may cause rain in some areas, but there is no way to predict how much or where it will fall.

Weather forecasting seems to be more guess than science, so nobody can tell you what the week will be like in the area you are located. But there is no reason not to come in October.

Thank you for the varied replies! I'm glad I didn't ask one of those "looking for" questions.........thought the weather would be a pretty safe topic, but then I should know better-nothing is safe on this board!

Aw Ken, ya had to go and Spoil it!!!!

I though for a moment we were going to have a truly historic thread there...

FYI: Hurrican Season is from June 1 to Novenber 1.
There have been hurricanes before and after those dates.
Hurricanes don't bother the North Coast much. Some waves, sometimes. Some wind, not much.

Major events are well know long beforehand. In all probability, if, while you are here, there is a hurricane a commin', you will have your scheduled flight outta here long before it arrives to our shores..

Scaredy cat!!

Yuk, yuk

HB, hurricane season now considered to end of November due to number of hurricanes during that month in recent years.

I stand on my head corrected!!

From the www.weather.com site:

Although hurricanes can form as early as late May and continue into December in the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico, the official Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1st and ends November 30th. In the eastern North Pacific, the official season begins May 15th and ends November 30th. Both official seasons cover more than 99% of all tropical cyclones in any year.

Abashed,

Thanks again to all for your answers! I am not the scardy cat...it's a friend at work who was unsure about the time of year. Nothing deters me from going except lack of plane fare!!!!

Note to Robert re "Looking for" - hell, I don't look for them, they come to Toronto looking for me!!! I know an artist/tour guide (no, not a sanky but definitely is prolific!!) from PP, called me out of the blue this spring, with the agenda of getting some help promoting him as an artist. He is now a Cdn citizen and no, I didn't marry him - I think he's one of the few that got here on his own......
Anyhow, I agreed to assist with making his 'dreams come true' as long as there is no sex, and you sign a contract with me. I am sure you can guess what his reply was!!!!!!

Too bad, so sad! Hast la vista mi amorsote, corazon, etc etc....
