Hi, our group of 6 Canadian guys (the un-official Canadian drinking team) are coming to Puerto Plata in January 2004 for 2 weeks. None of us have been to the Dominican before so we are looking for tips and suggestions. We all like to have a good time (most of us have been to Mardi Gras N.O. a couple of times) at night, and relax and tour during the day. We would love some suggestions as to where to party. As well, if anyone else is planning a trip in mid Jan, possibly hook-up? We are staying in the hotel strip between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. So any suggestions? Anyone else planning a trip?

Nothing like Mardi Gras in the DR. If you are staying in Playa Dorada, several hotels have discos there so you could check them out. If you are staying in Sosua, believe there's the Caribbean Club and the disco near the Sosua Bay, but seems quite laid back action. If you are staying in Cabarete, believe the people gather at the beach strip but this is mostly restaurants. For night life in the DR, I would suggest Santo Domingo. And to tell you the truth, even Santo Domingo nights are slowing down as people adjust to inflation. So, keep real busy during the day so you can enjoy the nights. Forget Mardi Gras here.

Thanks for the info. We are staying in the Playa Dorada complex. We are looking forward to a more relaxing vacation to Mardi Gras. (we're not 21 anymore!) We are however, intending on having a good time. Are there any beach parties in our area, or do we have to go to Cabarete? Any specific nightclubs? We have one included as part of our all inclusive at the Puerto Plata Village, but I hear that it can be slow.

Cheers!

I also am from the Great White North, just north of Toronto. When are you going to be there? A friend and myself are going from January 3 to 10th. Not quite sure where we are staying yet, been to a couple of places in Playa Dorada. If you will be there at the same time, maybe we could meet up.

Sosua is the place to go if want to party. Hit the beach (beautiful)during the day and the many places at night. More bars than you could hope for. All filled with chicas as well.

The Playa Dorado complex is nice but when I stayed there in September, I found myself leaving at night to find a good time. The Crazy Moon in my opinion is over-rated. A local crowd of sankies waiting to pounce on the female tourists.

Sosua would be my choice.

Yea *giggles* we're the 'DR1 kids' as nicknamed by numerous 'mature' members. We try to get together in Cabarete a few times a week for a meal or a drink.

Onnos is closed for 5 days?! Why? Did they have another illegal immigrant working there? Guess we'll just have to keep Lax open until dawn ...... don't know if Julian will be happy about that. ;)

Stay well,
Amy

They are redoing the floor or something ... buliding a platform, I am not quite sure! Yea, I think Julian would be too drunk to think to close it when it is that busy. But ya know they have that lady next door and thats why they close at 1 :)

Seriously .... I haven't been out in Playa Dorada for quite some time although I stayed there for my 1st visit to the DR as well. Nice place, you should be comfortable. As for going out, while we were there I frequented the Jack Tar Casino which has a disco in back. It's not very busy from what I recall. Most of the resorts in the complex have bars and discos, but the only people you'll meet there are other tourists. I'm sure we'll arrange a get together when you guys come down .... maybe we could show you around the Cabarete/Sosua area? There's definately a fairly large population of younger people in Cabarete who have moved here from all over the world. It's a small town so I'm sure you'll get to know some of the 'locals' by the time you leave, depending on how much time you spend in the town. One thing I must say is that I prefer the Cabarete beach to the beach that we visited at Playa Dorada. There's a more social feel to the beach here .... more people to talk with, restaurants to visit and not as many people harasing you to buy something when you walk down the beach.
Hope this info has helped some.

Stay well,
Amy

That's awesome! Thank-you all! We are all laid back guys looking to have fun. We are pretty much open to anything! We are arriving on the 7th of January, and leaving on the 22nd. We are staying in Playa Dorada. We are definately looking forward to the nightlife, and we aren't afraid to travel a bit to have a good time. How do you suggest we get from place to place? Money is not really an issue, we just want to get around without getting ripped off.

We are the younger crowd (at least we like to think so -all being 24-26 yrs old) so we really appreciate the tips, we will definately check out Cabarete! And if anyone wants to hook-up and show us around, we would be eternally greatfull! Sosua sounds interesting as well. We are still young enought to party 'till dawn!

What should we expect for meeting tourists? Is it fairly mixed? People from all over, or do some countries frequent more than others?

Naskapi: We will be there when you get there, drop me an e-mail if you want to meet-up for some bevy's, it would be great to see more Canadians!

Amy: Awesome tips, you've basically explained exactly what we all want to do, tour around a bit, see more than just resorts, and go out for a good time! If you want to arrange a get-together we would love to! Believe me, we are all friendly, and love to have a good time!

Thanks All! Love the tips!

Best solution would be to split your vacation. Spend half in Playa Dorada and half in Cabarete. Best way would be to rent a car, but we don't recommend anyone drive at night -- foreigner or Dominican, either. So, your best option is to befriend a taxi driver and have him join you for your night out in Cabarete, unless you can change accommodations and split the time between both places. Cabarete is shortly over a half hour drive from Playa Dorada.

Martini,

I would suggest taking a taxi to Cabarete for your first trip. Please read previous posts regarding driving in the DR. It is dangerous, especially if you're not familiar with the local rules of the road. Also, the Gua-Gua (sp?) system works quite well and is cheap. A gua-gua is a mini-van-taxi. Alls you do is stand on the side of the main road ..... they'll usually slow and ask if you want a ride, signal that you do, then fix the price!! Don't ask "how much" once you've arrived at your destination, always fix the price before you get in. Then make sure you get out in the right town. ;)

There's a mix of tourists and locals here, mostly from Germany, Holland, Canada, the Caribbean, the US and South American countries. I've even met people from South Africa on the beach in Cabarete. :)

We'll have to check with the other Cabarete Kids ;) but I'm sure we can arrange a get together. Post a thread on a Cabarete get together about a week before you arrive, then all who are interested can have a say in where and when.

Stay well,
Amy

Age Differences?

Is there that big a difference from the mid 20's to age 21? In 4 years, you age quickly.

You want to have a good vacation stay outside all inclusive hotels and move around a bit. Unless you already bought a package.

As with most things, negotiate the price.
The Playa Dorada taxis are a major ripoff if you pay the listed prices.
I was usually able to find one who would drive me for less than half what the list price was.
Sometimes I would walk out of the complex and wave down a taxi, or have my friend call one for us.
Often I would rent a taxi for 500 pesos for 2 hour plus another 200 pesos per hour.
I would treat them to some drinks and sometimes some food as well, and usually the driver wanted me to call him manana.

I was in Playa Dorada this past May and it was alright. The crazy moon disco wasn't that great in my opinion but I guess it depends on what you like. I wanted to hear Merengue and Bachata besides I was in the DR. They played a lot of English music which I could of stayed home for that. I don't mind hearing English music but not all night just a few songs but the disco is catered to the tourists. I had the manager one night at dinner at a table next to me ask me about the club I told him it played too much English music and he didn't believe me. But what I didn't know was that the DJ was sitting at the table and I wasn't saying really nice things, ooops!
We did go on some day trips out to Cabarete and Sosua and went to other clubs. I really like Cabarete it was fun! I say get out of the complex and have some fun! And do remember to negotiate the cost for the taxi before you get in it.
Just my opinion!
Wish I was going there now, oh how I miss it!
