Hi,

I have recently moved to DR and I'm looking at several options to obtain a vehicle here, which I will require for the operating of my business. I will be requiring a specialized vehicle and I would prefer to have the necessary work completed in the US. One of the options that I am looking at, is to purchase a local vehicle that is already registered in DR, and have it shipped to the US, have the work completed, and then return the vehicle here... instead of outright purchasing the vehicle in the US and bringing it here.

Does anyone know the legal ramifications of doing this? What are the duties and costs associated with this? Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Another thought that I had was to have the vehicle shipped to Puerto Rico, and bring it across on the car ferry. Then I would have it registered in DR, but it would be in my hands, not Customs. Does anyone know if this would actually save any money?

Thanks for any help that you guys can provide.

Ciao.
