Planning first Trip to the DR... Feedback Please!

I starting to plan my first trip to DR. I'm shooting 7-10 in or around Sept/Oct 06.' I trying to see what's to do there beside drink and go to the beach. I Don't really dance much, I swim a tad bit, but I could do that anywhere. I thinking of trying to seek out some relatives that I'm unacquainted with but I'm afraid of what I might find. I'd also like to spend a day or so off the tourist path to see what the average Dominican does for fun. Any suggestions??

Maybe you could tell us what you like doing, and we could tell you if it's available, and where to find it.
