Hello,
I will be going to Rio San Juan next week and need some tips or advice on the area.I've been to Puerto plata three times before so if anyone could fill me in on the happening night spots, resturants, things to see and if day trips which company has the best rates. We have rented a car so we could travel about. Thanks for any advice. :)

The only real disco in RSJ is the Nuevemillenium, which is on the highway just before the entrance to town on the left. It is a Dominican style disco. Dark and tacky, with lots of hookers, but a nice little dance floor, bachata and merenque played at earsplitting volume, and cheap drinks.

Perhaps a better selection for a couple would be the outdoor Rancho Tipico right by the Laguna Gri Gri. Don't know the name, but you can't miss in if you find the lagoon. They also serve food there, and the Chicharron de pollo is quite good.

Make sure you go to Playa Caleton. It is the beautiful and secluded. Beach on the North Coast, and maybe the whole DR. You can take a Moto Conch as it is about 1 mile East of Rio S.Juan. Just ask, everyone knows it. You can eat fresh fish and lobster with a table directly on the beach in the shade if you like. Tony will take care of you, and he speaks English.

A little further east is Playa Grande Beach, and also the Golf course. If you want some Rivers, you can rent a car and go about 25 minutes east. There are two to see. One is the Blue Lac. It is difficult to describe, like a cave with clear blue water. Just before that is a river where you can swing from a tree like Tarzan and dive into the water. Again, hard to describe, but fun if you are a little adventurous.

A few years ago I spent several weekends in the Rio San Juan area... at the hotel within the Playa Grande Golf Resort and another all-inclusive a little to the west (don't remember the name). Both had what I considered very basic rooms and the food selection was poor.

Others may be able to educate us both, but I found very little to do in the area other than play golf (at a great course!), spend time in the tiny casino within the all-inclusive, or attempt to avoid the stage shows. After those experiences, I switched to staying in Cabarete and making the 45 minute drive to play golf.

You're getting rather close to Samana, so perhaps a day trip to some of the waterfalls or to Las Terrenas/Playa Bonita is worth the effort.

Is there a nice/reasonable (non AI) place to stay for a couple of nights in RSJ ? ( I hope to make a visit for a weekend when I'm in DR next, just to check out the beaches - I hear there are some really beautiful ones around there...)

Bahia Blanca Hotel.
Reasonable prices, great owners/operators (Canadians), good location, always hear great reports from those who stay there.
Have no website or contact info, but always seems to be vacancies in low season.

If your looking for fun in the evening and don't really want to go to a disco there's a bar called Frank's it's fun. You can eat have a few drinks and dance to merengue or bachatta. It's an outside patio bar, like most in the small town. I have spent many trips in RSJ if you have any questions please feel to message me. Have a good time!

Thanks for all the suggestions, looks very nice (perhaps a bit smaller, quieter place helps every now and then). I will just turn up and check out the places you mentioned.

I wonder how much guagua charge from Sosua (can't remember if I need to change or if there is direct one..), any ideas ?

You can get a direct gua gua at the transport center on the main road directly across from the Texaco Station. The price is about 100RD, but could be a little less. They run all the time.
