Has anyone heard about the boat stolen from beach in PC that capsized between here and Puerto Rico? I have been away and have heard that some people died. I heard that 80 people were on a boat meant for 20. Very sad.

The stories of Yola trips to PR are always going on every week without end. Their attempts to seek a better life are almost always at the expense of human life and as such just another testament to life here in the DR.

These articles don?t pertain to the case you are talking about. I remember reading about it but I couldn?t find it;

Yes I actually know the owners of the catamaran. And since my post I have learned a little more. But much seems to be rumor. At least one and maybe as many as 15-20 people died. US Coast Guard was there and is apparently taking credit for saving the rest. But employees of the owners had been searching for and found the boat and were there too and helped rescue survivors. It just makes me so sad. These people paid a lot of money for passage to the US. They are being misled by their own countrymen and people are dying. I also wonder about the armed security guard who was suposed to be watching that and all the other boats on the beach. They say he was sleeping and was detained and released.

what happens to them?

What happens to the people that are captured by authorities? Are they arrested for trying to flee the DR? What do they think they can do once they get to Puerto Rico? Wouldn't they need a passport or something to fly to the US from Puerto Rico?

Once they are captured they are returned to the DR. Some of them are in fact prosecuted for leaving the country illegally and others are just let go. Either way they are out the thousands of pesos they paid for the attempt and a lot of them look for more money to try again.

Due to the large Dominican and PR establishment in PR there is always an avenue for them in the DR where a lot of them work illegally and send funds back home.

There is also an underground railroad for illegals in PR whereas they supply ways for those wishing to go to the US a way to do so. If they get caught in that attempt they are returned here.
