Importing a Scooter

I've seen a lot of threads about importing cars. But what about importing scooters? I never thought about it until a friend told me that a "pasola" purchased in the DR would cost around RD $140,000. That seems a little excessive when I can get a scooter for less than $2,000 US in the states. And it won't be one of those crappy underpowered yamahas that they rent to tourists. It would seem that even subject to the same importation fees and taxes that are assigned to US cars, importing a scooter would be cheaper than buying one in the DR.

Keep in mind that I would only be riding on the north coast (i.e. Sosua and Cabarete) as it is too dangerous anywhere else.

Thanks

That sound's a lot better. And to be fair, maybe she did say RD $40,000. But she doesn't speak english, and I'm still working on my spanish.

Thanks a bunch for the info.

No need to import a scooter. Pasolas and pasolitas are plentiful. Just shop around you'll find one in your price range.

The little scooters go for about 15,000 pesos used and about 30,000 new. The bigger (nicer ones) go for about 60,000 new. For used ones the price ranges anywhere from about 30,000 to about 45,000 depending on condition.
