<I posted this in the wrong place originally. Here it is again>

I will be driving from Juan Dolio to Samana soon and I am looking for suggestions on a good route to take.

The obvious route would be to go up through Santiago, past Puerto Plata and along the coast to Samana. That is fine but I am seeing on the map a potential alternative going north through Monte Plata.

Has anyone gone this route? Does it exist? How are the roads? Would it be any faster than driving around the long way (i.e. through Santiago>Pueto Plata...)

I look forward to your feedback.

well it seems absolutely crazy to drive to Samana from Juan Dolio VIA SANTIAGO and PUERTO PLATA!!!!

take the turn for San Fransisco de Macoris near La Vega off of the Route 1 autopista( north)( I THINK it is route 19)...it is a real nice flat straight road...once up in san fran...turn east( which will lead to you going north eventually) and head towards Nagua...once there follow route 5( I think from memory) east to the samana penn. along the coast .

it would be another 5 hours of driving going up through santiago and through Puerto plata!!!!!!!!! maybe 6!!!!!!!!!!!...you might actually double the trip going through those towns!!!!!!!

when i get home tonight Ill verify on my map.

I have looked at the maps and there are little roads here and there...which in your MIND may seem like a way to cut the time...but they are probably poorly marked and rough roads in poor shape...thus you wouldnt make an better time...best to stay on the few better large roads . Plus there are bigger and better amenities on these larger routes in case you need places to stop

Here is something I wrote a while ago:
Basically:

4) In Macoris, you go straight into town. You will come to a fork, there are signs, and you bear to the right. Follow that road for about ten or twelve blocks until it comes to a four lane avenue. Then you turn right, and follow that road all the way to Nagua.
5) In Nagua you have to be alert as you come into town since the right turn towards Sanchez and Samana is sometimes not well marked. Again, to the right. (If you miss the turn off, don't worry, just turn right. All roads in Nagua end up on the water and you just turn right again.
From Nagua to S?nchez is an easy run. As you come into S?nchez, there is a fork in the road and a sign indicating Saman? to the left. Bear to the left and you come uphill to the road that leads to Las Terrenas and Saman?. Turn left onto this road and follow your nose. The turnoff to Las Terrenas is well marked if that is your destination.

Same: Basically, coming in from the Duarte Hwy. there is only one main road in, especially from the South (SDQ). From the North there IS that turn off a El Pino but it is too dangerous for any non-professional Dominican Driver...and you do not save that much time.

And I am obviating the approach from the West via Moca, Salcedo Tenares...which is, by the way, a pretty good road by all accounts...
