Seems like each year the first storm comes earlier and last storm is later. At this rate, we will soon have a 12-month hurricane season.

Andrea, the first named storm of 2007, is in the Gulf of Mexico, with storm warnings up for all along the coast. Not a big storm, winds just 45 mph, but what makes Andrea noteworthy is the fact it is only early May.

Andrea is NOT in the Gulf of Mexico but off the north Florida - south Georgia coast. We've been getting gusty winds of up to 25mph and light rain for several days in Daytona Beach where I am right now. And at this time as the storm slowly drifts SW and out of the Gulfstream it seems to be breaking up. The ocean water temperature is just not warm enough outside the 80 degree stream to afford intensification of the tropical storm.

Yes indeed. A 'large weather organization' got it slightly wrong in their first reporting.

Early for the season indeed .. but it is by all accounts a sub-tropical storm.

Checking some stats, it seems that this is the first named storm in May since 1981 (Arlene). Before that, in April 2003 there was Ana.
