I am flying inot POP on July 2nd. Im looking for a hotel on the beach that is small and NOT all inclusive. What area/town should I be looking at.
I have stayed in Boca Chica numerous times, looking for a little more quiet area. Thank you.

There is no beach clean enough to swim in, in Puerto Plata, except in Playa Dorada in the all inclusive resorts.
Sosua or Cabarete will be your two best options.

Puerto Plata Beach Resort is on the beach and not an all-inclusive. 1000 pesos a night. = $30

The beach here is clean. It is right beside the Playa Dorada Beach. Rocky lives in Sosua and only suggests Sosua to people on this board. Give POP a try. Casino on premises. Big clean pool. Security but guest friendly.

You think that I have an agenda that I do not have.
I believed that PPVR was the hotel on the Malecon, very near Long Beach.
Is that incorrect?

Just answered my own question by Googling it.
I see that it is in Playa Dorada.
Mistook it for that hotel at the location I just described.
BTW: The OP makes a request about staying clear of AI resorts, and Playa Dorada is pretty much wall to wall AI hotels.
Don't you think he would be happier in Sosua or Cabarete?

Geez,
Now I'm even more confused.
I had Googled Puerto Plata Vilage, which is in Playa Dorada.
Not that I Googled Puerto Plata Beach Resort, this is the address I get.
Avenida Circunvalaci?n Norte, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
That doesn't make sense.
It wouldn't be on the beach at that location.
Charly... Please locate this hotel for us.

I am considering Los Gringos, is it worth the ride?

I too was investigating that option for my next trip...dont know anything about the place but it looks phenomenal and really rustic. If the pics are anything to go by, those cabanas on the beach look like the perfect escape.

If you do go with this place, please post a review upon your return. Good luck.

PS a far cry from Boca Chica!!!

There are many good hotels in both Sosua & Cabarete, and the POP airport is right in Sosua, so it's a lot closer than going to Puerto Plata.
Very few hotels are right on the beach in Sosua, while there are many in Cabarete, although you will find that Cabarete tends to be a fair bit more expensive than Sosua.
Cabarete is a young sporty windsurfing town, while Sosua is more diverse.
I can't say which will best suit you.
Only you can decide.

Marco,

Puerto Plata Village is located in Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata Beach Resort is about a klick west of the old Long Beach area.

Puerto Plata Beach Resort is on the Malecon, right across the street from a restaurant called Cosita Rica. Ring a bell? It's not far from the Latino Quarter Hotel.

You may or may not want to swim at the beach at PPBR, but you will find tons of people swimming there on the weekends.

Also, ask them to show you the room at PPBR, some are nicer than others. Make sure it has hot water, and the A/C works, if the room has one.
Thanks JD.
That is what I thought in the first place, then Charly gave me cause to doubt it.
I wouldn't stick my big toe in that water there.
It'll be many years before nature cleans it up enough for my taste.
If you walk a short distance East of there, you will come to a "river/creek" that flows into the ocean, that is outright scary.
It looks like pure sewage.

I agree with Rocky. I will not swim in the ocean near Puerto Plata Beach Resort or on Long Beach! They did not fix the sewage outfall problem properly. As well the creek empties just up the beach from where you swim. YUCK.................. no thank you.

IF the OP wants to swim in the ocean, this is not for you. IF the OP wants to be near the ocean but close to restaurants etc, then Puerto Plata Beach Resort is an option. They do have a pool which is reasonably well kept, the hotel is old and some rooms are better then others. It is close to many restaurants and other things. It is guest friendly but not over run with guest "options".... if you catch my meaning.....

Rocky, there are two.

One is Puerto Plata Village which is an all-inclusive in the Playa Dorada. The other, a former AHSHA Marina all-inclusive is the Puerto Plata Beach Resort. That is near Long Beach on the Malecon in Puerto Plata. Once, long ago, it was an all-inclusive, but is now condos and rooms.
