we are staying in carbarete in january for 2 weeks. we would like to hire a 4 wheel jeep and visit different places along the coast. how long does it take to get to samana, and where are there some good beaches with calm water. I would like to snorkle but I am not a brilliant swimmer so dont want large waves.

you cant get much calmer than sosua......it takes about three hours to samana....five minutes by plane lol
4-5 hrs to samana, a bit more if you take several stops to enjoy the ride.
if it's not only for a snorkel stop the trip is worth to be done, but plan a overnighter in samana and drive back the next afternoon.
just for a one day snorkel trip it's too stressy, and like mentioned above, you find good snorkel spots in the area where your hotel is located
