I am planning on spending a long weekend in Santiago with my favorita and am looking for a place with a pool (cause I like to lounge/read and she looks good in a bikini).

Marriott - not bad with a corporate discount (around $100) but was hoping for something close to downtown

Gran Almirante - looks great but kinda pricey...I saw a price somewhere of about $180 - yikes - is that correct?

Hotel Matum - lot of semi-bad reports posted here, is it the same as it was a few years ago? There aren't any recent reports on the Matum. Does anybody know of current pricing or website for the Matum?

So in a nutshell...a clean hotel with a pool downtown Santiago and no bedbugs under a $100...am I asking too much??

thanks all in advance,
ctRob

I stayed at Hotel Matum a few months ago and really enjoyed it. The rooms look like they have been recently updated and are nice. I paid 1,700 pesos for the room.

Hotel Matum

Hotel Matum does not have a pool.
If you get a room try to get one at the end of the hallway.
The rooms near the stairs can be noisy.

The attached casino is good also.

Are you sure were talking about the same place?

There was a pool and most likely its still there but not many use it and it is in back of hotel not much of a view.

Thanks Folks,
I will check out the Hotel Matum the end of this month. Should I reserve in advance? I would like to just show up and take a look at the rooms before giving a credit card, but I'm not familur at all with how busy the hotels are in Santiago, would that be a bad idea?

thanks again,
ctRob

Would I be safe not booking in advance for the Hotel Matum and just walking in? I will be there Nov. 1st.

I want to try it out but would prefer looking at the rooms first.

Also, I saw mention of a Lockbox at the front desk, does anyone know if it's big enough for a laptop? Or if they have a safe and will accomadate you for locking up a laptop?

Thanks in advance for all the help,
ctRob

This hotel does have a large olympic-size pool it is next to a concrete-wall. It is not well design for a good view, that the way things are billed here. barely acceptable. Remember this is a fourth world, great weather, lousy designers, and architects and engineers.
Considering the City Planning that been done here in Santiago, street end with traffic going in the opposite direction on road be careful driving.

ok...thanks...but I thought it was 3rd world, did the DR drop a notch?

I agree, and also might add that code compliance (are there construction codes?) is a bit lacking also... I have seen some atrocious electrical work...downright dangerous...I'm always leery of touching anything electrical, especially in the bathrooms.....been shocked turning on an overhead fan there.....I have a pic of open electrical boxes, under a bench, next to a pool, at the WATER PARK!! HEY, I just jacked my own thread!! Is that legal?

And on masonry block work, (now you done got me started), why don't the Dominicans rake the mortar joints when their laying block??? Bugs the living crap out of me...anybody know?

And as far as the driving, I have driven rush hour in NYC and Sosua....I can drive anywhere Baby...:bunny::bunny::bunny:

well NYC has rules and most people tend to follow them because tickets are so much of a hassle.. and sosua doesnt have the numbers of people to even make a small traffic issue.

now if you have driven in Santo Domingo and said you can handle it, then you can handle Santiago........SD is much worse...but about rush hour or so dowtown can become that traditional Dominican parking lot.....the cars all look like sperm heading for the egg..it is every man for himself and get what you can.....the only rule..TRY not to scratch your car.....

while I dont thin driving in Santiago is DANGEROUS...it can be FRUSTRATING for sure...

now driving between the smaller cities like Licey and Moca, and Tamboril is dangerous!!..because of all the motorcycles zipping around and people walking and the cars having enough speed to cause death when they get out of control.....

also last year I read here that one of the odd hotels in santiago was renovating their pool. and that the op thought it might be a long time before it was finnished......

I wonder if that hotel wwasnt the Matum

I stayed there 5 years ago, and it was dirty hotel.......

walking down the big hallways was like walking on skid row.. dirty torn carpet with stains....bare walls...no signs of life!! ha ha ha...

Thanks Bob, I actually will probably not be driving. That's why I'm looking for a hotel downtown. Most of the bad reports I hear about the Matum are from a few years ago, and a couple posters here had some good things to say about recent stays there. I'll probably just do a walk-in and check it out before signing on the dotted line. Inlcuding looking at the pool, I hadn't thought of that. I'll try to do a report here after our fun-filled weekend.

On another note, how do you pronounce Matum? I'm a stickler for that...

I would make a reservation, most hotels in the DR don't require a credit card to hold a reservation.
