From another website. Any intel on this?

Dr. Jos? Rafael Vargas is promising, in collaboration with Cable Atl?ntico, to provide a wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) connection for the residents of Sos?a. The connection is primarily meant for students who can then take their laptops from school, to the streets and parks to work with the free Internet.

The action plan is called 'Sos?a Wi-Fi, free Internet for everybody'. The wireless Internet connection has a range of one kilometre from the source. This should be enough to cover all Sos?a, according to Dr. Jos? Rafael Vargas. It is not yet known exactly when this connection will be operational.

Have not heard of it, but 1 kilometer range wouldn't even tickle Sosua.
Heck, the beach is longer than 1 kilometer.

DeLAncer mentioned it to me last weekend but did not say what coverage. I agree with Marc, 1K is ridiculous. A regular cheap wireless can do that. I'm sure "I hope" he meant 10K's.
Advice to victimes of laptop theft, you might be able to spot your stolen equipment. LOL.

why complain?

Free is free. 1K, 10K, 10M -- who cares. Good on him if he can get it done.

Easy boy.
The OP asks for any intel on the matter.
Eddy corroborates that DeLancer has mentioned it to him, thus there must be some truth to the story.
I explained to the OP, who may not know Sosua well that 1km of coverage will not extend, as in the text that he copied, to schools, parks, in the streets, as Sosua is vast.
If replying to a person in an accurate fashion is complaining in your books, then you have some perception problems.
We work hard to maintain the integrity of this site and of the replies people get.
One could hardly ask for more, than accurate replies.

From Indotel's website (but remember it's election time ;) )

Looks like the 1 kilometre is from the source point so perhaps they envisage having several source points.................or one extremely crowded small area?

Giving free internet to students would be a great idea, but the project they mention would have many inherent problems.
Kids who are in the footprint, will be downloading music in epic proportions, making the service ultra slow with frequent disconnects.
If they use software that limit's individual bandwidth, heavy internet pages won't even open.
Then, if the intent is to help students, having the service in parks and the streets will be of little use to them, unless they own a laptop, and very very few do, not to mention that laptops are proportionately so much more expensive than desktops, and that the savings from buying a desktop could pay for years of internet service.
Then there's the problem of battery constraints with laptops.

I'm inclined to agree with Lambada, that it may be just an election ploy.

I forgot, he also mentioned that people would be able to access internet, chat, email etc. BUT no large downloads (Music-Movies etc.) Don't know if it's possible to control that???
Politics?? probably.

They can block certain ports and throttle domians that are known for file sharing. Even the most basic of routers allow for port blocking and some of the newer ones allow you to throttle users and various IP's or domains.

If it's going to be anything like the free wireless in Santo Domingo, then it's going to be practically useless. The usual great idea, but lack of planning and infrastructure, knowledge etc kills the project.

My thoughts, exactly.
Sounds good, works bad.

Rocky,

Did you really just call me 'boy'? I actually laughed at that. How 'bout I work on my perception problem, and you work on remembering that over the internet, no one can see you wink?

Point on the 1K vs 10K issue is that 1K, for free, is a good thing. People with laptops could congregate at public areas within the 1K and take advantage of the service. Given the price of internet in the area, that's a good thing. I don't think the plan is or was to give free internet to the whole of Sosua, but rather to provide access to those who would struggle to pay for monthly internet service. Of course, those same people would have to be able to pay for a laptop...

The point I was making is that you accused us of complaining.
We were in fact, answering the OP's question.
I'm an ole' man now, so I guess you're still a boy to me, lucky you.
One day you'll be old and ugly like me too.

The 'plan' is to announce free internet for some area. The 'plan' is NOT to have working free internet for some area. Please look at this self-same 'plan' Santo Domingo and see the 'results' in action. ;)

What we have here with this administration, is a massive collaboration to make headlines - instead of a massive collaboration to govern a country. (Uhm, I've just realized there are a few other countries like this too)

I believe the plan is changing as we speak.
The folks involved are looking at it from a different angle now and discussing the possibility of dumping the El Batey tourist wifi thing, and concentrating on Los Charamicos.

A friend living on the road toward the casino in Sosua told me that he picks up an unknown
wi-fi signal 5/5. It's off & on. Could they be trying something out? Anyone else pick this up.

Inaugurated yesterday.
Puerto Plata Digital
That seems like good news.
When I last spoke to Yohanny, he was still contemplating the original idea of gearing the service to tourists.
After discussing it a bit, he seemed to like the idea of focusing on getting it to students, and from the tone and content of that article, that's what he appears to have done.
Kudos to him.

I think it is a big step in the right direction, and I, too, thank Sr DeLancer and everyone else involved with their project.
