Is there a way (without planes) to get to Punta Cana from Samana (or a neiboring town in either place.

Yes, there is a ferry (passengers only, no vehicles) you can catch from Samana across the bay to Sabaneta de la Mar. From there guaguas to Punta Cana. Check out this thread for more specifics.

Or you could drive most of the day and get there.
Samana-Sanchez-Nagua-connect to the new highway south.
Santo Domingo-San Pedro-La Romana-Higuey-Bavaro-Punta Cana.
About 6 hours if you do not get lost. The ferry is no faster either!!

You could use public transportation and take the Caribe tours bus from Samana to Santo Domingo. Once there, you would have to take a taxi a short distance to the bus station on Maximo Gomez and get the express bus to Bavaro which leaves 4 times daily.
