Lets see, First must see is the " El monumental" the symbol of Santiago which is located in the center of the city. The area surrounding it is full of clubs, bars, resturants, billards and of course many beautiful women.

The Calle El Sol located in Santiago's Colonial District is basically the Canal Street of Santiago for New Yorkers were you can find just about anything. Lots of eye candy here too for all you lurkers.

Santiago runs through the Yaque del Norte river which can be seen throughout the city.

PUCMM Pontifica Universita Catolica Madre y Maestra is the university in Santiago located 5 mintues from the Monument and basically has alot of bars, resturants, internet cafes, and also alot of women as well lol.

Estadio Cibao and the Palacio are the sports stadiums (Baseball and Basketball respectivley but also other events) This is located next to the childrens hospital and near the El Ejido barrio in Ens. Bolivar so watch yourself over here lol.

Casinos (Matum, Almirante and others located throughout the center were you can basically play rigged machines, meet with some working women (if you know what i mean) They all have hotels as well if you want to stay in one. Pricey though.

La Sirena is basically the Walmart or Kmart of DR if you want to do some crazy shopping. They have ones located in Calle El Sol and in Los Jardines right off Av. Bartolome Colon

Theres a major mall but i forgot the name. Just opened. From what i heard its basically the mall we consider a mall here so great place to shop and meet women too lol.

If your driving by car you can basically see the best and worst of Santiago. Alot of rich and alot of poor and can see the aspects of the city as well.

Good luck and enjoy it cause i cant wait to go back.

One Not To Miss item is the Centro Leon. Located on Ave 27 de Febrero in Villa Progreso. This is about 5 minutes from the intersection of Estrella Sadhala and 27 de Febrero. All taxis know it.
Another place is the Ceballos Art Gallery, in Reparto Panorama, just off of Juan Pablo Duarte Ave, about 150 yards past the Ayuntamiento building ...
If you like see how "the other half" lives, go up to Los Cerros De Gurabo and look at the "modest" dwellings of Santiago society.
If you like to watch future baseball players, go down in back of the baseball park and watch the kids play any afternoon.
If you want to see a really Dominican setting, go down to Ave Valerio and walk down to Los Hospedajes, the marketplace where all the fruits and veggies arrive into Santiago. Go in long pants and shoes...

There is also the Morel Folklore Museum on Restauraci?n Street, just down from 30 de Marzo.

Remember, Santiago is not a tourist town and caters more to cultural events: concerts, displays and such at the Teatro Regional up near the Monumento (NOT Monumental!!)...

For night life, I am sure you can get into trouble by yourself...

Santiago
Here's some info about restaurants here in Santiago:

Puerto Madero, E of la Plaza International - churrasco is good, although they have a tendency to somewhat overcook.

La Bahia fish restaurant - one in Los Jardines next off of La Metropolitana and one near La Ochoa that is on 27 in Pueblo Nuevo. Equal in price and quality to Maimon. Fish soup at the one next to Ochoa es para chuparse los dedos, co?o.

Cafeterias in El Supermecado Nacional and El Central, both on 27 right next to eachother. El Nacional has more of a variety of foods and better sandwhiches but is more pricy. El Central has better chivo and sancocho and a great mixed green salad and is more economical.

Las Colinas Mall must have now at least 10 restaurants in the food court. I don't know how the food is but they have a Pizzarelli's and it is the best pizza North of Jarabacoa and South of PP.

Algo Mexicano en Los Jardines - as authentic mexican as you will find North of the capital - a must visit although maybe a little pricy.

Palermos Bar in Los Jardines on Texas Ave. - best Italian sandwhiches in Santiago - only served in the evenings.

Plaza Optimus restaurant on 27 in Los Jardines - pricy but very varied fare, American bfast, sandwhiches, steaks.

El Gusto Familiar - a comedor about a half mile down from El Leon Jimenez towards Tamboril, good food for RD90 or so.

My favorite - Pollo Licey on JP Duarte just before it crosses Las Carerras on the left at the gas Station. Ask for the whole chicken breast even if you have to wait for it. Talk about good - carambola!

Camp David off the Calle Turistica - good economical American bfast and wonderful mountain view of Santiago. Lunch and dinner menu items of questionable quality and value.

Ranchero steak house near the Monument - Iffy at best -once had the best thick cut steak of my life - next time I went there asked for the same thing and they sent me a different cut that tasted like pure liver. I don't think I will return

Mariscos Centro near the Monument - Don't try! - this is for people who want to be seen or tourists - altogether horrible food at three times the price that it should be.

Steak place at food court on 2nd floor in Plaza Internacional on 27 - steaks taste just like charcoal lighter fluid, forget it.

I agree about the open air food market Hillbilly mentioned. I really like all the activity and buzz going on and the negotiations ect ect. I am glad he mentioned the location....it is close or in the colonial zone I thought.

also the street for shopping isnt Calle El Sol....it is Calle DEL SOL.....

but there are shops all over all those streets down town.

I also hear a lot about a cigar muzeum...never been , but since dominican cigars are so desireable... that might be a trip.

if it is clear out make the trip to Camp David...get there at least 2 hours before sunset...to take a good look around the city..bring binos if you have them.

the food will take 2 hours to come and you will be all set for sunset!! ha ha ha

as for all the rest, to each their own....hope you find something interesting

Thanks for the answers.

Yes I am not a "tourist" but I'm not really sure of things I should plan to do in Santiago. I will be in Santiago with a first timer who does not like the beach. So I'm more interested in the cutural and nature things.

1. What are the museums in Santiago I can check on and do they have english translators?

2. Whats a good place to eat and people watch?

3. Whats a good place to buy "dominican things". (not meaning t-shirts).

4. Whats a safe club/disco to visit.

5. Is there a China or Korea -town in Santiago?

1. What are the museums in Santiago I can check on and do they have english translators?I already told you and Centro Leon does have English guides-you pay extra)

2. Whats a good place to eat and people watch? (You did not ask this the first time: Pez Dorado is the oldest and nicest place to eat. To watch people, got up to the area around the monument and pick a place.

3. Whats a good place to buy "dominican things". (not meaning t-shirts).There is a Mercado Modelo on Sol St. that sell touristy stuff.

4. Whats a safe club/disco to visit. All the ones that are cited are good.

5. Is there a China or Korea -town in Santiago?
NO

Anything else??
