My good friends and I would like to visit the children we sponsor who live in the DR. We want to also bring our children ages 5,7 and 8 so we would like some recommendations on hotels that are child friendly. I would be nice if it had a pool. ( I see that only the Grand Almirante has one).

On another note, we would also like to bring our children and their families gifts.

There is really no forum for people who visit their sponsored children so what kinds of living conditions would their families live in? Ive seen no pictures, but I think it could be a very small one room home.

Ive never been to the DR at all so I'm not sure what to expect.
Pots, pans, clothing. What are some good things that I can bring or should I just plan a trip where I take my sponsored child shopping?

thanks in advance

The organisation through which you sponsor the child should have much of the information you ask for, if they're doing their job properly!

I work for one such organisation (although not the one your child is sponsored through - they don't work in the Central region) and they have detailed guidelines for visits, including what gifts are appropriate/welcomed, and all the information the sponsors need to prepare for a visit. They recommend practical gifts like clothes, simple toys/games and school supplies, nothing too expensive or flashy. It is always nice to bring something typical from your country/town, and photos of your family and where you live.

A sponsor visit is usually preceded by a briefing on what to expect - especially as some families' living conditions can be grim - some cultural tips, and a visit to the supermarket in the nearest town with a staff member who can advise on what the family needs and will appreciate most.

If you go to Gran Almirante, ask for rooms farthest away from the casino or you will be up half the night. Believe me, I know!
The children will be appreciative of whatever you get them or give them. Most of those children lead a very simple life, I wouldn't buy anything that needs to be plugged in or "charged" in case they don't have electricity.

boys - clothing, running shoes, baseball gloves, soccer balls....etc. Girls - clothing, shoes, hair accessories, inexpensive jewelery. You must have pictures of the children you sponsor, age...etc and what they like to do. At least I did when I sponsored two children through Children international.
