Does anyone heard of problems at hamaca hotel

I heard yesterday in the news about some cases of robbery at hamaca hotel in boca chica. The victim said on a radio show that the security staff at the hotel didn't pay attention to the problem at all, she felt very bad and went to the media with this complaint, turns out that to the radio show called more than 5 people with similar cases of robbery, even one that lost 10k and the hotel staff didn't take any action to fix this problem. Obviously the security is involved because the room doors aren't violated.
It's very sad to hear this kind of news, I hope the take care of it.

It's very sad to hear this kind of news, I hope the take care of it.

Don?t know about any problems at the Hamaca maybe Steve G. could shed a light on this but what the heck is someone doing running around with 10k in his pocket? Asking for trouble;)

I heard the show, a dominican living in New York and spending a few days at the Hamaca with local family, she told the wery first day she arrived at the hotel she left 2 iphones, 3000 dollars and jewelery in the room, (not in the safe) and when she came back from the restaurant everithing was missing. The hotel manager, a spanish, said they were investigating but found no trace of violence in the doors nor register of access from the electronic keylock.
It could be an internal job but, I would never leave 3000 US in a hotel room, for that amount of money I would have request the safe key in the reception. Seems a little weird to me...

My daughter and son-in-law spent a week at the Hamaca last October, and they'd never go back after what happened to them. One night they went into the casino [run by Americans I understand] and they were immediately approached and handed a voucher for some free play. They sat down at a table and were told the play was in pesos. They lost what they had on them, and said they were going back to their room to get cash [it was in the safe] but the dealer [American] said not to worry about that, that they could continue playing and settle up later. Long story short, we get a hysterical call about midnight [we were in Santo Domingo] that they were told they owed over $4000 US to the casino, after they had been told they were playing in pesos and thought they had lost just over $100 US. Of course they insisted that they never said it was peso play. They refused to let them leave the casino without paying up - or they were calling the police to have them arrested. My husband got on the phone with some high-ranking casino people in SD who tried to step in and help but in the end they handed over their credit cards for a cash advance payment. My husband had called and spoken to the casino mgr. saying that we were driving out from the capital, but he refused to wait - I think he may have been a little unnerved by an angry Dominican father who has worked in the casino industry for 40 years. Then they told them they could bring the cash back to them for a credit - thank God they didn't do that because the bank later told them there is no such thing as a credit on a cash advance. The day after they got home the crooks ran their credit cards through again and again, for $500 a shot, a total of about $2000 more - [they didn't have to pay that, the bank closed the card and gave them a new one]. It's important to realize my daughter not only is half Dominican and has been going there since she was in utero, but we also live a mile from Atlantic City and my husband has worked there since 1980 - and they're not naive casino newbies, they both grew up in the shadow of the AC Boardwalk and the casinos. Naturally, they never should have fallen into the trap of playing without cash in hand, but that's another story. We often wonder how many others this scam has worked on. When we were there last week we spent an evening with one of the SD casino mgrs that my husband has known forever, and they re-hashed it all over again, and we got angry all over again :ermm:
I hiss when I hear the hotel's name.

I wouldnt even leave an IPhone out in the open like that, let alone $3k USD? is this lady nuts? if these types of robberies keep happening more and more in la Hamaca i might reconsider and not go there....sheesh! :ermm:

IPhone at Hamaca

Wanted to add that when my brother-in-law saw that my daughter had brought her IPhone with her, he told her to NEVER let anyone see her with it in BC - he warned her there were people who would kill her for it. [too dramatic??? I'm not sure] She brought it for her music when she was on the beach [we have a bunch of cell phones that we use just in DR and she had one of those for calls]. They did pay the hotel to use the room safe to keep the IPhone, passports and cash in there - was a good move I guess!

security of your personal items is YOUR responsibility not anyone else's. i've been to the Hamaca and never trusted anyone but myself. i use to watch the maids clean my room..:ermm:

Casinos in the Dominican Republic have peso chips and US$ chips.
How could this happen? :ermm:

Who knows....? I guess they didn't know there were 2 sets of chips. I've been going to SD for 34 years and I never knew that, but then I don't gamble. Here in the USA there are only US Dollar chips - since someone told them they were playing in pesos maybe they assumed all the chips were pesos because it was the DR? Let's not forget the attempt to put bogus charges on their account after they were back home - something very wrong going on in that casino.

One time at Fun Royale I went down to the pool but I had forgotten my keys (room and safe) in the room.
Not only that but the safe door was wide open with the key in the lock.:surprised
By the time I realized and got someone to let me in, the maid had already been there.
I was happy to see that nothing was taken.:classic:

After I lost a cologne and 300 dollars at the Jaragua Hotel in 1999 , I would NEVER leave any values in any hotel, DR or anywhere in the world, unless I am in the room.

another reason why i dont travel with money in hand....its sad how much of this looting goes on and inside jobs at these hotels...crazy.... :paranoid:

do they still cut off hands in saudi arabia? that may be the only "safe" place left. i am sick of it! from the politicians, (our leaders), to the watchman, to the hotel maids, to the chain snatchers, the bernie madoffs, i am sick of it. to the guys who could not guarantee the asphalt roof patch, that leaked, on my apt building in SD unless they did the entire roof, which is impossible anyway because of all the tinacos and AC units up there, you are thieves, to munroe muffler in NY who wanted 144$ to change 20$ rear brake pads on a honda passport, i had it done elsewhere, you are thieves. to the NY state assemblyman, who lives 17 miles from the capital, that billed NY state 21,000$ for gasoline, you are a thief. to the senator in SD/dentist in NY etc. etc. etc. we live in a stealing world and the police are fighting a war on drugs. my friends it is only going to get worse.................

I know that the lady was naive by trusting too much in the hotel security, but maybe she's not aware of safe boxes and thought that is better to leave your belongings in the room instead of hanging around with 2 iphones and 3k in a public beach...

I couldn't agree more!!! but I think that all this is happening because "good people" doesn't get involved in the political stuff and when rarely they get involved either they turn to the wrong side or the 'system' takes them out...

i was going to stay there originally , but after searching reviews from more than 5 web sites, everything was negative about the hotel, so i opted for the C up the hill

We had a watch stolen from our Hamaca room one year. We thought it was left in the safe. Anyway, we got security involved, filed a report, and from that day on the maid didn't speak to us.

If you've used the safes at Hamaca, there's a small area near the front of the safe where an item may get overlooked. We always check that area.

So, after we get home, we get a call from Hamaca that they found the watch "in the safe" - which of course they did not. Interesting.

Anyway, we have vacationed at the Hamaca since then and haven't had a problem.

I have heard of numerous problems there. I know a guy that works there not with the hotel but independently and he said people would get stuff stolen all the time, and sometimes if the victim had some clout with a general or something that would call the hotel, the stolen stuff would magically reappear where somebody had already looked 10 times before. I myself have had problems (guns pulled on me) at the old hilton in Juan D, Costa Caribe. There is a racket going on there in all kinds of stuff, and the ATM's are notorious for scams.
