In Santo Domingo there are dozens of bilingual guys walking along El Conde, the Malecon, Ave Independencia, at the casinos and just about everywhere who are tripping over one another to "help" you. Many folks will tell you to avoid these types altogether but I have met a few who I have found useful. For the price of a couple Presidentes and maybe a couple hundred pesos they will fetch stuff for you at the prices the locals pay, translate conversations and explain the lay of the land until you can get yourself up to speed. Just be careful in choosing. Invest in an electronic translator and make an attempt to pick up at least a rudimentary understanding of Spanish before you go. It will make a World of difference.
