These are times when big companies in the Dominican Republic are investing in solar energy while at the same time they seek governmental restrictions against homeowners installing the systems and a change in the present rules for solar energy. The Ministry of Energy has been listening to the big companies.

Meanwhile, last week 32 ministers from the Western Hemisphere gathered in Punta Cana to talk about energy. The Sixth Meeting of Energy Ministers of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) took place at the Barcelo Bavaro Convention Center in Punta Cana from 14 to 15 March 2024.

The focus of the meeting was Renewable Energy in the Americas: Integration and Innovation.

Dominican Minister of Energy and Mines Antonio Almonte told his colleagues that the Dominican nation has taken large steps forward in the area of renewable energy...

What percentage of power in the DR is generated at the moment by solar power?

A big increase? What is the actual percentage generated?

My take away from this is not how much power is generated but how major power companies are trying to get government involved in putting restrictions in place for consumers and local citizens from installing their own solar power.

It takes many years to remove levies, taxes and laws once enacted.

Coming from an engineering background reducing transmission losses and capital infrastructure cost seems a better idea than protecting major corporations long term profits.

DR should be doing more to be both power and foreign investment independent. Cost of green / solar power technology is ever improving so agreeing to long term fixed plans today is a dumb move.

Smart move would be, as is happening like building the water and energy storage infrastructure solutions like the new reservoirs being built and planned. Get at much low cost power to pump when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing.

Other comment would be to decrease taxes on high efficiency, highly insulated fridges and freezers. Biggest consumers of electricity for the majority of the population.

Also inverter AC to DC ceiling fans which consum 20 to 25 % of the power of an AC motor ceiling fans.
