Luis Abinader, Leonel Fernandez and Abel Martinez say yes to the ANJE debates

President Luis Abinader has announced that he will take part in the debate organized by the National Association of Young Business People (ANJE), scheduled to be televised on 24 April 2024.

Abinader’s remarks upon making this decision centered on the fact that there is no legal obligation for him to participate in the debate, but considering the effort made by the people at ANJE, he said he will do so to contribute to democracy in the country.

Three-time former President Leonel Fernandez has also said that he will take part in the debate as the candidate for the People’s Force (FP) party. Santiago Mayor Abel Martinez, the candidate from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), had said he would participate when asked in November 2023. He confirmed he will show at the debate.

Curious facts @Dolores @CristoRey :

- This is the first time in Dominican political history that all major candidates, including current president, fully agree to go on debate
- The last Presidential debate was in 2016 (same by ANJE), but Danilo (then in power) declined to participate, and got reelected.
- Abinader participated in this debate and lost the election, but become the rising opposition leader until 2020 (that wasn't part of the old political parties.
