Indotel takes connectivity to southwestern provinces

Dominican telecom regulator, Indotel is implementing a program to bring free or low cost broadband connections to residents in 23 municipalities and 44 municipal districts in the country’s southcentral and southwestern regions.

The US$19.4 million project is funded by the Interamerican Development Bank. It will benefit towns in the provinces of Azua, Bahoruco, Barahona, Elías Piña, Independencia, Pedernales, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa and San Juan de la Maguana, Indotel said in a press release.

The regulator estimates that close to 143,000 people will benefit from the new infrastructure.

The project includes providing free internet to 343 public institutions, and a special plan for the most vulnerable population with a 10Mbps download speed at a monthly cost of RD$299 (around US$5).
