Christmas in the Dominican Republic

My wife and I have visited the DR, during February, for the past 10-years. During that time we have been fortunate to become friends with 2 Dominican families, in Puerto Plata. Because of this friendship we have sent gifts to all of the family members for birthdays and Christmas.

My question is: How is Christmas celebrated in the DR? Is it a commercial holiday as it is in the US? Is it a religious holiday? Are the children treated in a special manner at this time?

We have read the posts regarding the Christmas fireworks. That sounds like an interesting way to celebrate the holiday.

If any one who knows the manner of Christmas celebration in the DR, can help me with answers to my questions, I greatly appreciate their help.

Please do an archive search, especially

Look for a post by Natasha which is quite complete.

it is a special series of events that will culminate on jan 6th for the children with All Kings Day (Feast of the 3 Kings) when, generally in Santo Domingo proper, the kids get presents. Not so popular in the rest of the country.
