A few days ago I was invited to attend a new product launch at the La Aurora cigar factory in Santiago. I was invited by a freind who owns several cigar stores.

It was one of the best Dominican experiences I have had in my 13 years here. From when you are greeted at the door, to the antique cars, the tour, a great meal and the presentation, it was a 100% first class experience. I don't smoke but the tobacco aroma (and about half the people smoke in there) is very pleasant. A militant type non smoker should not go.

They were launching a new cigar so after lunch most people in the dining room lit up and enjoyed a good cigar with a very good rum. I haven't smoked in years but I was sure tempted.

The Dominican heritage here was amazing. I was surprised at how much hand labour is still involved in the cigar making process. They also make a number of machine made brands but that wasn't on the tour. They said that they employ around 1800 people so it's a big operation.

If you ever get the chance I would highly recommend this tour.
