My husband, our 2 daughters {9yrs & 4yrs} and I,stayed here for 2 weeks in May 2003.
We loved everything about this hotel!
This is a fairly big resort, but they do have little golf buggies to take you and your luggage to your room. Each block has 3 floors and unfortunately there are no lifts, but we didn't find this much of a problem.
There are 3 swimmimg pools and the main pool is a huge, freeform pool with pool bar and jacuzzis.
Food is not a problem here, there are plenty of restaurants included in your all inclusive - buffet, Italian, Mexican, steakhouse and a pizzeria. The pizzeria is fantastic, every pizza is freshly cooked to order and you can order a pizza that's not on the menu and they'll make it for you! The pizzeria also has an advantage over the other restaurants as you can see the entertainment from the terrace.
We did try the mexican & italian but the service was very slow in both, and we found the buffet a better choice for us personally, having children with us.
The beach is stunning and we often went down to the beach before 6a.m to watch the sunrise. It's truly spectacular to watch it rising above the caribbean sea!
Unfortunately, the sea in Punta Cana is very rough. I consider myself to be a fairly good swimmer but even I couldn't swim in it. The waves are big and strong, they crash into you with quite a bit of force. It might be better in the summer, but from what I could gather it's usually quite wavy!
It really is a shame as the sea is such a beautiful sight, really turquoise and the sand is white.
There are plenty of loungers around the pool and on the beach, but to get one on the beach in the shade you have to be up early. We saw people putting on their towels when we were watching the sunrise at 6a.m.
The entertainment was good. The staff really impressed us with some of their shows and there is always a mini disco for kids prior to the show.
On our last night, they threw a beach party! That was the best thing ever!!! All the bar staff, entertainment team and chefs made their way with the guests down to the beach where they srt about putting up disco lights and a stage for dancing. The barmen started serving drinks and the chefs got a BBQ going. We had music and dancing, the entertainment team were dancing with all the guests whether you can dance or not and everyone seemed to be having fun. Then we had a {drunken, by then} limbo contest, then more dancing and finally a foam machine, which literally covered the beach in foam and bubbles!! It was such a wonderful party and we all had a blast! It didn't finish until 1.30a.m but we could all have gone for more!!!
This was our second visit to D.R. On our first visit I absolutely fell in love with the place and we are going back again next year to try Bayahibe.
I know though that one day I WILL get back to the Grand Flamenco, it's just a case of too many hotels I would like to try in D.R, too little time {and money!}

You don't drink the tap water at the resort but they furnish you with plenty of bottled water to drink. Food is very good. Rooms are nice. Staff is very helpful. I have never had a problem with swimming in the ocean. This past month was my 4th visit to this resort. Good luck. More English speaking staff available to answer questions when you try to call them would be helpful!

2/2/05 A group of ten are going to the Occidental Grand Flamenco Punta Cana in March 4-11,2005. What excursions do you recommend. Read so many reviews about this place good and bad, just going to go there with an open mind and see for myself. Are there any concerns with the water there?
