University of Colorado hurricane forecaster Philip Klotzbach expects a new record for named storms early in the season to be set this year. The US National Hurricane Center is giving the tropical cyclone formation developing from a low-pressure area southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands (off Africa) a 50% chance of becoming a named storm. If it gets named, it would be Josephine. In a tweet, Klotzbach remarks that the current record for the earliest Atlantic “J” storm is Jose that occurred on 22 August 2005.

Tropical storms are unusual in July and August.

The Dominican Republic could be on the path of “Josephine.”
