The Medina administration invested billions to build the 70-km Santo Domingo beltway, but unfortunately it is not being used as expected, as reported in El Caribe. A short stretch is still pending for completion.
The construction of the Greater Santo Domingo bypass road was begun in 2013. The intent is to decongestion the chaotic traffic of Greater Santo Domingo by detouring those who are headed for the provinces or seek to crisscross the National District and the Santo Domingo province. The 70 kilometer highway links Haina port in southwestern San Cristóbal to the Multimodal Caucedo Port near Las Americas International Airport in southeastern Santo Domingo.
The beltway is designed to divert around 30,000 vehicles from the metropolitan area. It surrounds the centrally located capital city on the south coast of the island.
