He had been hospitalized at the Cedimat in Santo Domingo for two weeks after testing positive for Covid-19. The announcement came on Tuesday, 6 July 2021. 72-year old Willy Rodriguez, the founder and director of the Z101 radio station, was not able to recover from complications from Covid-19. His doctors say his brain shut down from brain bleed.
His nickname was “the legend” for his many contributions to radio in the Dominican Republic.
President Luis Abinader was among the first to honor Rodríguez. “I deeply regret the passing of Don Willy Rodríguez. His contributions to communication in our country earned him his well-deserved nickname “La Leyenda de La Radio” (The Legend of the Radio). My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Peace to his soul!” wrote Abinader on his Twitter account.
