The country is celebrating the life of marine biologist Idelisa Bonnelly de Calventi. She was 90 years old when she passed away last week. From the forum of her classes at the state university (UASD) and through her research, Bonnelly made people aware that we are an island and we have to look to the sea.
She had graduated with a masters in marine biology in 1956 from Columbia University in New York. In 1962 she founded the Research Center for Marine Biology at the UASD.
She is regarded as one of the most outstanding scientists in Latin America. In 1995, the UN Environment Program awarded her the Global 500 Award for having collaborated in the creation, in 1986, of the Banco de la Plata humpback whale sanctuary, the first sanctuary in the region for this endangered species.
