President Luis Abinader declared 15 August 2022 as a Day of Popular Rejoicing to commemorate the centenary of the coronation of the protector of the Dominican people, Our Lady of Altagracia. The commemoration does not suspend official or private work.

The Virgin of Altagracia is considered by the Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic as the protector and spiritual mother of the Dominican people.

The canonical coronation of the image of the Virgin of Altagracia took place on 15 August 1922 in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, during a week-long celebration. However, her veneration dates back “to the years of the discovery of America, at the beginning of the 15th century.”

Pope Francis is sending Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra, substitute of the Vatican Secretariat of State, for the celebrations.
