A 5.0 magnitude earthquake was felt in the capital city on Wednesday morning. Its center was located near the town of Matanzas in Peravia province (Baní) of the Dominican Republic.

Engineer Andrés Moreta of the Seismology National Center at the state university UASD said that the earthquake lasted two minutes, but people only perceived about 30 seconds. It occurred at 7:11am. The earthquake was along the same fault that caused the M10 earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

The Ministry of Education said that there were no structural damages to public schools.

The last earthquake to cause damages in the Dominican Republic was in December 2003, one of 6.4 magnitude that mainly affected Puerto Plata, with three dead, 30 injured and significant damages to property.
