In 1972, when the late Victor Gomez Bergés was 32, then President Joaquín Balaguer named him secretary of foreign relations, making him the youngest in Latin America to hold the position. Victor Gomez Berges would go on to serve in government for over 56 years. At the end of his career, he served as a judge of the Constitutional Court.
Born in Santiago on 25 February 1940, he was known as a lawyer, writer, diplomat, politician, and professor. Among his numerous positions on government, aside from being secretary of foreign relations, was the high-ranking positions in the departments of Education, Finance, Industry and Commerce and Interior and Police. He served as ambassador to the Holy See, Greece, Cyprus, Argentina and Paraguay.
