Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza has tweeted his request for a leave of absence to direct President Luis Abinader’s reelection campaign. Paliza is also president of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

The municipal election is 18 February and the presidential and congressional election is set for 19 May 2024.

Paliza requests his time off without wages as of 17 January 2024. He does not give a date when he would return to his job. The new government is to be sworn in on 16 August 2024.

President Luis Abinader aspires to be reelected. The better-reputed polls are on his side, indicating that if the President does not make the 50%+1 vote needed to win in the first round, he will win in a second round when only a simple majority of votes is needed.
