In its first two weeks in operation, the Santiago Cable Car has mobilized more than 10,000 people who have taken the introductory free rides. Already, there are daily long queues as people seek the savings and safe commutes. The skylift was opened to the general public on 17 March 2024 with limited schedules.

The first phase of the mass transportation project called for a RD$6.5 billion investment. The system targeted 73,968 inhabitants of nine of the most populous sectors in Santiago. Santiago is the Dominican Republic’s second largest city.

Julio Ramírez, in charge of Cable Cars for the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System of the Dominican Republic (Fitram), says the four-kilometer route takes 12 to 15 minutes compared to up to an hour during peak traffic times for those driving in cars.
