Traffic headed to Santo Domingo to Santiago was impacted on Tuesday, 13 August 2024 in the afternoon by a major accident that caused the highway to be shut down. It took dozens of brave firemen from La Vega more than five hours of intense work to put out the fire. A truck laden with fuel exploded caused a major blaze after impacting several structures. Three three vehicles were destroyed.

Preliminary reports are that the truck driver, trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle, crashed into a lightpost and exploded. The truck driver suffered serious burns and is hospitalized. A Hyundai Santa Fe and two Hyundai Sonata vehicles were impacted.

As reported, more than 28 emergency units participated in the incident, including ambulances, firetrucks, National Police units, EdeNorte utility service and others from the 911 Emergency System.
