Elian Peña / Diario Libre

Following the golden road paved by stellar ball player Juan Soto, 17-year old shortstop Elian Peña has agreed to sign with the New York Mets for US$5 million. Soto late last year signed for US$765 million.

Peña received the top bonus in the 2025 class for a Latin American prospect, as reported by Ben Badler of Baseball America. Peña began playing baseball when he was six years old in his native Azua province, being sent to train in Santo Domingo when he was 10 years old.

Peña’s reported US$5 million bonus is the largest given out in Mets franchise history. The previous record was that of Francisco Alvarez who had signed for US$2.7 million in the 2018-19 signing period.
